Work Arrangement

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan three times per week, at minimum.

Controllership is a multi-faceted team managing Corporate, Regional, and Business Unit Accounting, Treasury Accounting, Employee Benefits Accounting, Warranty, Consolidations & SEC Reporting, Financial Assurance, Technical Accounting, Design and Build, Sales and Marketing, Customer Care and Aftersales, Systems and Modernization with operations around the globe. Controllership's mission is to serve as a Strategic Business Partner, bringing prompt and insightful decisions to all strategic and tactical matters as they related to SEC requirements, accounting, audit/SOX compliance and financial analyses. Leveraging financial systems, we strive to increase visibility, improve efficiency, shorten decision cycle times, and reinforce financial integrity and accountability.

We are currently looking to fill three key senior analyst positions within the SEC Reporting team, the Balance Sheet & Cashflow Reporting team, and the Close and Consolidation Team. We are seeking individuals with intellectual curiosity, strong attention to detail, and the ability to act autonomously and think critically about the task at hand. Successful candidates will be able to decipher the big picture when approaching areas of responsibility and will be comfortable engaging a broad range of contacts spanning both peers and members of senior leadership as well as comfort indirectly leading others who are contributors to their area of responsibility. Successful candidates will have a proactive mindset that see what 'could be' instead of 'doing what was always done'.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

  • The SEC Reporting Senior Analyst Role will play a key role in the preparation, review, certification and filing of financial statements, footnotes, and MD&A sections within Forms 10-Q/10-K filings. This role partners closely with the business process owners to ensure accuracy of the supporting data submitted for each respective area of responsibility as well as our Investor Relations team to ensure cohesion of external messaging.
  • The Balance Sheet and Cashflow Senior Analyst Role will drive the month end close process related to cashflow reporting which includes review and analysis of all significant transactions globally to ensure appropriate cashflow treatment as well as execution of any adjustments needed to achieve proper treatment. This role will also manage cashflow and balance sheet reporting analysis for purposes of both internal and external reporting requirements.
  • The Close and Consolidations Senior Analyst role will play a critical role in the consolidation of total company results, translation system processes, income statement internal and external reporting, segment reporting, EBIT special items, profit in inventory process, year-end roll forward process, and related ad hoc projects.
  • Common Responsibilities

    • Understand implications of complex transactions and engage business partners in legal, tax, treasury, purchasing, M&A, etc.
    • Understand technical accounting conclusions and ensure planned journal entries will produce desired results.
    • Deep dive issues that arise during month end close and take full ownership of the resolution of the issue, communicating openly and often with the team to drive swift resolution.
    • Support the team during unique transactions such as segment changes, divestitures, acquisitions etc.
    • Support the review and validation of Investor Relations presentations, press release information, etc. for ad hoc announcements, quarterly earnings day materials and Investor Day activities.
    • Support continuous process improvements, control enhancements, and Take Work Out Initiatives to accelerate and improve the quality of the close and filing process.
    • Collaborate with Global Ledger team as well as IT for any upgrades, patches, enhancements, and production issues.
    • Coordinate system implementation and enhancement testing procedures with systems administrators and testers
    • Partner with Finance to determine accounting implications for all material business decisions.
    • Review and ensure application of appropriate internal controls and SOX compliance.

Team Responsbilities

As a member of the Controllership team, individuals are offered rotational opportunities to broaden experiences within the organization and expand skill sets. The following responsibilities may vary in applicability based on the Controllership team assigned:

  • Develop a detailed understanding of GM's processes and systems to identify control gaps and opportunities to streamline processes and controls.
  • Support a strong control environment to ensure accurate and timely results.
  • Research and interpret new accounting standards and assess how each applies to GM and comply with external 10-Q/10-K reporting requirements.
  • Support strategic initiatives and transformation activities focused on empowering our all-electric future.
  • Develop analytics and tools to supply insights into regional and business unit results.
  • Propose automation, analytics, and data processing approaches to meet business objectives.
  • Resolve complex accounting issues affecting strategic business initiatives and identify potential accounting risks.
  • Support cross-functional Finance teams while developing relationships to increase future career opportunities.
  • Complete special assignments outside of core job responsibilities

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business
  • Ability to work with sound independent judgment and initiative, while being able to rapidly take on and assimilate work from existing team members when needed.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of accounting and financial reporting standards (GAAP)
  • Ability to understand and apply more complex accounting and financial reporting standards (GAAP)
  • Willing to take on added responsibilities, attend training, and learn new technical skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with business, IT, and data analysis resources to capture, prioritize and document solution requirements, and drive measurable results.

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Chartered Accountant (CA)
  • Big 4 Public accounting firm experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Complex problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Capable of strategic thinking and transformational point of view
  • Passion for innovation, automation, and technology
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven commitment to teamwork and partnerships.
  • An understanding of (or interest in learning) data structure, data interfaces, and systems landscape
  • Experience with (or interest in learning) HFM, SAP, Power BI, KNIME, SharePoint, and/or Robotics Process Automation
