Position Summary
GEICO is seeking an experienced Senior Manager with a passion for building high performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms, and applications. You will build and manage a team of engineers with a deep focus on delivering enterprise-wide products to operate in a highly performant and efficient way. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating the culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.
Position Description
Our Senior Manager is an engineering leader who works with the engineering staff to innovate and build new engineering solutions, improve, and enhance existing solutions as well as leverage engineering solutions to solve critical operational problems. A Senior Manager will lead the strategy and execution of a technical roadmap that will increase the speed of delivering products and unlock new engineering capabilities. The Messaging team's mission is to design, implement, and optimize messaging and Event platforms, ensuring seamless messaging and event management, integrity, security and performance to empower our organization's data-driven success. The ideal candidate has deep technical expertise in building and maintaining messaging and event platforms at large enterprise scale.

Position Responsibilities
As a Senior Manager, you will:.
- Work with your senior leadership to address project dependencies, negotiate and estimate incremental delivery dates for milestones with the stakeholder community, and deliver projects on time
- Management responsibility for leading the Enterprise Messaging team in architecting robust database solutions, optimizing query performance, and implementing cutting-edge data management techniques, while championing technical innovation and maintaining a high standard of engineering practices
- Ownership of the end-to-end delivery of team strategy and platforms
- Identify and raise appropriate project risks, in addition to presenting detailed and implementable solutions or alternatives
- Understand how requirements and design choices may impact systems across multiple areas
- Report on your team's progress for project and other key metrics, in addition to presenting detailed and implementable ideas for areas to further improve or influence product or project delivery
- Initiate and support performance evaluation of team members
- Cultivate a culture that motivates all levels of performers to higher levels of achievement
- Build and maintain relationships with your team members to support an environment of trust
- Develop the team budget and be accountable for reporting on results achieved at regular intervals
- Significantly contribute to the team planning process to include surfacing associate level proposals
- Software and system design knowledge and experience
- Knowledge of cloud computing technologies and concepts (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, etc.)
- Knowledge of distributed systems and highly available scalable architectures such as active / active, multimaster, in and across geo sharding, etc.
- Development and Management experience in one or all the following:
- At least 5 years of experience in designing, developing, and operating enterprise messaging solutions using open source platforms and services, such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ, etc.
- Strong knowledge and skills in distributed systems, messaging protocols, data structures, algorithms, and design patterns.
- Proficient in one or more programming languages, such as Java, Python, C#, etc.
- Experience in leading and driving the adoption of open source messaging platforms and services within the organization. You have the ability to assess the readiness and maturity of the organization for adopting these platforms and services, and develop and execute a plan for the adoption process. You have the ability to train, coach, and mentor the team and other stakeholders on the best practices and usage of these platforms and services, and monitor and measure the adoption outcomes and benefits.
- Experience in defining and implementing design patterns for event-driven architectures and frameworks. You have the ability to design and develop reusable and scalable components and libraries for event processing, routing, transformation, and enrichment. You have the ability to apply the principles and patterns of event-driven design, such as event sourcing, event notification, event streaming, event aggregation, etc.
- Experience with software development, software delivery lifecycle, application modernization, DevOps, Service/Infrastructureas Service and Operations
- Basic understanding and managing CI/CD toolchain products like Jira, Git, Artifactory, Jenkins, Anchore, SonarQube and IaC tools like Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, Chef
- Knowledge of API, Microservices, network and security architectures and design patterns
- Demonstrated conflict management, decision making and negotiation skills
- Proven ability to concentrate and demonstrate a capacity for learning technical concepts and adapting to new technologies quickly
- Experience in application monitoring tools and performance assessments
- Constructing, interpreting, and applying metrics to your work and decision making, able to use those metrics to identify correlation between drivers and results, and using that information to drive prioritization and action.
- 6+ years coding experience
- 5+ years of significant experience building scalable, fault-tolerant, and robust products and platforms
- 5+ years of hands-on work experience supervising 10+ personnel in a technical environment
- 2+ years of experience with automated testing including Unit, Integration, and End-to-End functional testing
- Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology or related field, or equivalent experience
