Senior Manager, PaaS (RDBMS)

Position Summary

GEICO is seeking an experienced Senior Manager with a passion for building high performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms, and applications. You will build and manage a team of engineers with a deep focus on delivering enterprise-wide products to operate in a highly performant and efficient way. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating the culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.

Position Description

Our Senior Manager is an engineering leader who works with the engineering staff to innovate and build new engineering solutions, improve, and enhance existing solutions as well as leverage engineering solutions to solve critical operational problems. A Senior Manager will lead the strategy and execution of a technical roadmap that will increase the speed of delivering products and unlock new engineering capabilities. The Relational Database Management System team's mission is to design, implement, and optimize relational database systems, ensuring seamless data management, integrity, security and performance to empower our organization's data-driven success. The ideal candidate has deep technical expertise in building and maintaining RDBMS databases at large enterprise scale.

Position Responsibilities

As a Senior Manager, you will:
  • Work with your senior leadership to address project dependencies, negotiate and estimate incremental delivery dates for milestones with the stakeholder community, and deliver projects on time
  • Management responsibility for leading the RDBMS team in architecting robust database solutions, optimizing query performance, and implementing cutting-edge data management techniques, while championing technical innovation and maintaining a high standard of engineering practices.
  • Ownership of the end-to-end delivery of team strategy and platforms
  • Identify and raise appropriate project risks, in addition to presenting detailed and implementable solutions or alternatives
  • Understand how requirements and design choices may impact systems across multiple areas
  • Report on your team's progress for project and other key metrics, in addition to presenting detailed and implementable ideas for areas to further improve or influence product or project delivery
  • Initiate and support performance evaluation of team members
  • Cultivate a culture that motivates all levels of performers to higher levels of achievement
  • Build and maintain relationships with your team members to support an environment of trust
  • Develop the team budget and be accountable for reporting on results achieved at regular intervals
  • Significantly contribute to the team planning process to include surfacing associate level proposals
Qualifications
  • Software and system design knowledge and experience
  • Knowledge of cloud computing technologies and concepts (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, etc.)
  • Knowledge of distributed systems and highly available scalable architectures such as active / active, multimaster, in and across geo sharding, etc.
  • Knowledge in Operating Systems, Linux, Virtual Machines, Container (Docker/Containerd), Cluster Management (Kubernetes) technologies including running on private and public cloud infrastructure.
  • Development and Management experience in one or all the following:
    • Proficient in designing and optimizing relational database systems using open-source platforms like PostgreSQL or MySQL, showcasing expertise in database schema design, normalization, and effective indexing strategies within the open-source ecosystem.
    • Proven proficiency in fine-tuning SQL queries for open-source databases like PostgreSQL or MySQL, specifically within a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) framework, such as Kubernetes-managed database clusters. Expertise in utilizing database optimization tools like pg_stat_statements for PostgreSQL or MySQL Enterprise Monitor for MySQL to enhance performance in a PaaS-oriented DB platform.
    • Extensive knowledge of open-source database technologies within the context of building and automating Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) platforms. Hands-on experience with tools like Terraform, Ansible, or Kubernetes operators to orchestrate and automate the deployment, scaling, and management of open-source RDBMS solutions, fostering efficiency and reliability in the DBaaS ecosystem.
  • Experience with software development, software delivery lifecycle, application modernization, DevOps, Service/Infrastructure as Service and Operations
  • Basic understanding and managing CI/CD toolchain products like Jira, Git, Artifactory, Jenkins, Anchore, SonarQube and IaC tools like Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, Chef
  • Knowledge of API, Microservices, network and security architectures and design patterns
  • Fluency with at least one modern language such as Python, Java, Go and experience with open-source software is a big plus
  • Demonstrated conflict management, decision making and negotiation skills
  • Proven ability to concentrate and demonstrate a capacity for learning technical concepts and adapting to new technologies quickly
  • Experience in application monitoring tools and performance assessments
  • Constructing, interpreting, and applying metrics to your work and decision making, able to use those metrics to identify correlation between drivers and results, and using that information to drive prioritization and action.
Experience
  • 6+ years coding experience
  • 5+ years of significant experience building scalable, fault-tolerant, and robust products and platforms
  • 5+ years of hands-on work experience supervising 10+ personnel in a technical environment
  • 2+ years of experience with automated testing including Unit, Integration, and End-to-End functional testing
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology or related field, or equivalent experience

Annual Salary
$120,000.00 - $261,500.00
The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate's work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
