Sr. ProtoType Engineer
Job Description:
Duties: Program, machine, and design prototypes to support critical design decisions within the R&D Engineering department. Support the design of new commercial products and take part in product development in the form of prototyping, concept generation, and design for manufacturability. Use CAM software (MasterCam at minimum) to create CNC machine programs. Program, set-up, and operate CNC machine tools (5-axis mill, swiss lathe, mill-turn) with high proficiency to create parts that meet quality/performance criteria. Manage machine maintenance, including scheduling contractors for routine maintenance and repairs. Select, recommend, and qualify preferred solutions to design and manufacturing problems. Manage co-ops and interns in machine shop activities, design for manufacturability, and CNC machine operation. Evaluate proposed changes in the product design and manufacturing process and oversee implementation of solutions to problems with manufacture of the product. Contact and direct the efforts of outside sources such as technical consultants, machine shops, suppliers to obtain parts and or finished products. Develop and support pilot manufacturing activities and capabilities. Support the transfer of knowledge and manufacturing to internal and external manufacturing sites. 10% domestic travel required.
Requirements: Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering field and 4 years of experience in the position offered or related position. Must have 4 years of experience with: CNC machine tool programming, setup, and operation; manufacturing methods, specifically: swiss screw machine, 5-axis machining, wire EDM, CNC grinding; programming and machining complex multi-axis parts with multi-piece assemblies; designing, programming, and creating parts using: Swiss Screw CNC Lathe (Manufacturer: Tsugami); Multi-axis Vertical Milling Center (Manufacturer: Brother); CNC Lathe (Manufacturer: Mazak); SolidWorks CAD software, including part design and drawing creation; designing and machining custom fixtures for work holding and for testing; and navigating CNC machining software applications, including MasterCam, and using MS Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
