Department Statement
The Coordinator for The Center for Women's Studies; Program Coordinator for Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies ("Program Coordinator") serves as an assistant to the Director of the Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program (WGSS) and is the main program organizer for all events that come out of the Center for Women's Studies (The Center). The Center and the WGSS Program work together to create knowledge and greater awareness across campus on issues related to gender and sexuality studies, using an intersectional lens to study and address historical, campus-wide, national and international issues. The WGGS Program, established in the 1980s, is housed at The Center and is an interdisciplinary program that draws upon the expertise and strengths of faculty in a variety of departments across divisions. The Center for Women's Studies and the WGSS Program have a mutually beneficial and collaborative relationship that accentuates one another's strengths. The Program Coordinator for WGSS serves as a key nexus between the two. The Program Coordinator also forges strong ties with the Office of Equity and Diversity, particularly during the summer months when the Program Coordinator works on projects and initiatives that foster a diverse and inclusive Colgate community.

Accountabilities
  • The Program Coordinator assists the Director of WGSS in academic and Center programming, including the weekly brown bag series. This long-standing, popular series invites to campus scholars and activists engaged in cutting-edge work in the interdisciplinary field of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies; it also incorporates presentations by Colgate faculty, staff and students on new research, local and global activist initiatives, and important social issues on campus, nationally, and internationally.
  • Supports curricular and co-curricular events and programming, including working with faculty to invite guest speakers to campus; facilitating gender and sexuality-focused events in collaboration with other departments, programs, and offices across campus; developing events and spaces for community reflection on major events that impact our campus.
  • Supports gender- and sexuality focused student-led groups on campus to develop their activities as needed. Works collaboratively with other offices such as the Office of Sustainability, the Office of Equity and Diversity, the ALANA Cultural Center, Haven, and LGBTQ Initiatives to develop and support initiatives. Serves on relevant campus committees, such as the Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence Coalition, Task Force on Equity and Diversity, etc.
  • Collaborates and works with the Office and Equity and Diversity, particularly throughout the summer months, to support initiatives and projects that foster a diverse and inclusive Colgate community.
  • Manages student interns who provide vital work for The Center, such as media outreach, posters, podcasts, health news and resources, and Center upkeep.
  • Ensures the bi-annual publication of the WGSS feminist journal Allegorical Athena. Works with the English Department and the Department of Writing and Rhetoric to promote the program's vision in creative and non-creative output.
  • Manages the creation and distribution of the Center's weekly newsletter, all social media accounts, event posters and other outreach campaigns. Manages The Center's website. Supports The Center's feminist podcast series.
  • Supports faculty-organized academic excursions for courses, such as to Seneca Falls, the Harriet Tubman Home, NYC and other locations. Supports and teaches in the High School Seminar program as needed. Connects with women-owned businesses in the area.
  • Maintains The Center's physical space, which is heavily used by students, faculty, and staff. This includes overseeing the library collection, kitchen inventory and facilities, and study and classroom spaces.
  • Supports the director in compiling information for and producing the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program annual report. Supports the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies assessment procedures.
  • Assists the director with financial accounting for all events pertaining to The Center and academic program.
  • In collaboration with Advancement, engages in outreach to alumni to ensure their knowledge of and continued engagement with The Center and its academic programs, including inviting alumni to participate in panels and other events focused on careers and activism.
  • May serve on committees through Dean of the College initiatives and student organizations.
  • Encouraged to attend on- and off-campus trainings and conferences.

Preferred Qualifications

Education
A Bachelor's degree in WGSS or related field.
