Agency Description

The Capital Planning Group provides support for the Department’s capital budget process and facilitates in the development of the capital improvement plan through planning and asset management efforts. Its mission is to plan for the future of Philadelphia’s capital assets to ensure continued, reliable, and quality services to its customers. Overarching goals are to inform the capital budget, facilitate the prioritization of capital improvements, increase communication, and aid in financial forecasting through asset management.

Job Description

Position Summary

The Engineering Intern will work within the Capital Planning and Asset Management Program. The primary responsibility is to assist engineers, GIS specialists, and scientists on a variety of projects related to drinking water and wastewater facilities. The intern will assist with projects related to data analysis, GIS mapping, technical report review, and meeting participation. The role involves supporting ongoing efforts in facility planning, asset management, and capital improvement initiatives.

This is an in-office position.

Essential Functions

  • Gain exposure to water and wastewater facility operations and the complexities involved in managing them.
  • Develop a strong understanding of project management, water and wastewater treatment, and the capital budgeting process.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Compile, analyze, update, and interpret data from field locations or databases to aid facility planning and financial forecasting for capital improvements.
  • Utilize GIS software to compile, maintain, and produce geospatial data and maps.
  • Review and comment on engineering technical reports.
  • Attend and participate in meetings for capital projects aimed at improving operational capabilities of water and wastewater facilities.
  • Read and summarize relevant literature for engineering research projects.
  • Assist in organizing presentations, handouts, and notes for meetings with executive and other staff members.
  • Organize and participate in Knowledge Management Program tasks, including webinars about water, wastewater, and stormwater services.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in water and wastewater facilities.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Computer proficiency, especially with Excel.
  • Willingness to learn and perform new tasks.
  • The internship is a co-op position, typically lasting 3–6 months, and is open to students at the intermediate or advanced level (sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student).
  • Relevant majors: Environmental, Chemical, Civil, or Undeclared Engineering; Business and Engineering; Environmental Science.

Hourly Rate: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
