About the Position:

The Manager, Donor Engagement and Communications, will report to the Associate Vice President, Philanthropy Communications, and will play a key role in developing proposals, cases for support and other communications to engage individuals with the potential to make major, principal and transformative gifts.

The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker and a skilled and experienced persuasive writer who is able to translate complex scientific information for a donor audience. This individual should be a responsive, positive and amiable collaborator, who is comfortable interviewing enterprise leaders, physicians and scientists and strategizing with senior-level gift officers. The Director of Communications should be experienced creating a variety of donor-centric communications materials and familiar with brand/identity development, integrated communication programs, digital communications and effective graphic design. Experience in health care, higher education or other large, complex organizations is strongly preferred, as is a high comfort level writing about medical and scientific subjects.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • The following are the primary areas of focus for the Manager, Donor Engagement and Communications:
  • In consultation with fundraisers and senior leaders, write proposals and other solicitation materials to support major, principal and transformative gift conversations and solicitations.
  • Write letters, impact reports, presentations materials, leave-behinds and other materials to help cultivate and steward our highest-level prospects and donors.
  • Conduct thoughtful interviews with enterprise leaders, scientists, clinicians, program directors, graduate students, donors and administrators to support content development.
  • Serve as a trusted resource for gift officers, assisting with their development of effective solicitation materials and communications strategies.
  • Partner with colleagues on scripting for videos and creating material for donor events, and social media platforms.
  • Write and collaborate on the writing of cases for support for strategic initiatives in philanthropy.
  • Help develop and disseminate key messages for strategic initiatives in philanthropy. Ensure that messaging is consistent throughout proposals, white papers, case materials, publications, web pages and other communications vehicles.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Annual Giving, Planned Giving, Digital Communications, Donor Experience and Philanthropy Communications, Individual Giving and City of Hope's Marketing and Communications to disseminate key messages through various channels.
  • Working with philanthropy leaders, help develop gift opportunities at the $100,000 to multi-million-dollar level to support strategic initiatives.
  • Assist the Associate Vice President in implementing communications plans for strategic initiatives in philanthropy. Building on the case for support, develop secondary publications, one-sheets, website content, videos, digital communications strategies and other communications as needed.
  • Develop proposal templates, elevator pitches and other tools, as needed, to help fundraisers advance gift conversations and ultimately secure significant gifts for strategic priorities.
  • Collaborate with enterprise leaders and other partners on the development big ideas that can evolve into major philanthropic priorities.
  • In addition, the Manager, Donor Engagement and Communications will:
  • Develop and carefully monitor for the team all project timelines, ensuring that the necessary information is gathered, meetings are held, vetting takes place and design is completed, so that high-quality projects are delivered in an efficient and timely way.
  • Keep the Associate Vice President and her/his designee updated on timelines and progress on various projects.
  • Edit the writing of colleagues and peers for style, grammar, content and messaging.
  • Collaborate with graphic designers on the design of proposals, publications, donor presentations and other materials.
  • Manage other communications projects as assigned.
  • Major, Principal and Transformative Giving - Develop compelling proposals and other communications materials to engage individuals with the potential to make major, principal and transformative gifts.

  • Keep the Associate Vice President and her/his designee updated on timelines and progress on various projects.

  • Manage other communications projects as assigned.
  • Serve as a role model for the Office of Philanthropy.
  • Act as a communications leader in representing the Office of Philanthropy with City of Hope colleagues and external partners.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with City of Hope faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrate an ability to solve problems, overcome hurdles and navigate sensitive issues with discretion, tact and strong communication skills.
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of City of Hope's vision, priorities and differentiating qualities.
  • Participate in committees, task forces and other special projects as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Basic education experience and skills:
  • Must have a Bachelor's degree.
  • Relevant experience may substitute for educational requirements.
  • Must have 5 years experience in philanthropy communications, institutional communications, nonprofit communications, donor relations and/or philanthropy.

Preferred education experience:
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in marketing, communications, journalism, English, creative writing, philanthropy, science or related field preferred.
  • Development, Academic Medicine, Non-Profit Communications, Campaign Communications
  • Familiarity with PowerPoint and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience working in philanthropy communications in a complex medical or academic development setting is preferred.

  • Strong portfolio of writing samples that demonstrate facility with fundraising projects. Excellent command of language, grammar, spelling, with a good eye for detail.
  • The ability to relate comfortably to leadership, faculty members, administrators, and staff.

Additional Information:
