Director of Philanthropic Partnerships
The USA TODAY NETWORK is seeking a mission-driven, creative and collaborative leader to drive development of philanthropic partnerships that both bolster local journalism and create new opportunities to serve readers, viewers and listeners in communities nationwide.
This is an extraordinary role at a critical moment. The recently launched transformation of Gannett's Content Team is delivering a return to growth in the size of the audience we serve, a key contributor to engineering a sustainable business model for local journalism across the country.
In this role, the Director of Philanthropic Partnerships will be responsible for executing a strategy that delivers significant new funding for community newsrooms. The successful candidate will have experience raising funds and developing long-term partnerships and relationships with foundations and charitable organizations. The Director will be an excellent listener who is connected to what our newsrooms are excited about and can build a process to support them while working closely with colleagues to deliver the financial outcomes intended.
This role reports to Regional Editor & VP News Greg Burton. This role is remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska and Hawaii.
Responsibilities:
- Establish partnerships with philanthropic and non-profit organizations to fund high-impact projects as well as critical coverage areas for Gannett's 200+ local newsrooms, including coordinating records of grant revenue.
- Directly solicit contributions from charitable organizations to support new and existing initiatives.
- Collaborate with local and national news teams on upcoming projects to develop grant requests and proposals. Write and submit grant requests and partnership proposals.
- Manage routine communication with partners and funders, including the preparation and submission of impact assessments, audience and financial reports and other information as requested to satisfy grant requirements.
- Collaborate with internal legal and standards teams to ensure grant requests, proposals and expenditures follow established guidelines for compliance and independence.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master's degree in journalism or any other subject or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least five years of experience in development, grant writing and administration.
- Demonstrated success in running a P&L and delivering on financial goals.
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusion and belonging and creating teams that reflect the communities we serve.
- Ideal candidates will have a background in local journalism and have pre-existing relationships with philanthropic and non-profits active in supporting journalism.
