Position summary

The Marine Business Development (BD) Manager plays a fundamental role in the Global Marine Leadership Team. The BD Manager will work in areas that range across the value chain and directly influence business strategy, product development, the customer experience, account management, and digital innovation. The BD Manager will also represent Chevron Marine Lubricants as the main spokesperson for our products and services.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

Global Strategic Direction Development and Execution

  • Responsible for the Chevron Marine Lubricants strategic framework that aligns with aspirational goals established by International Fuel & Lubricants (IF&L) leadership.

  • Champion segment-focused growth on a global scale in Brand Extension, New Buildings, Alternative Fuels, Ancillaries, Offshore, and Services.

  • Responsible for market research, assessment, and identification of Business Development Opportunities for Marine Lubricants.

  • Represent Marine Lubricants in the IF&L Energy Transition steering committee. Team with Supply & Trading colleagues responsible for marine fuels, Marine Products & Technology (P&T), and Chevron Shipping to achieve mutual understanding of the decarbonization of deep-water shipping and customers priorities in this area. Incorporate learnings to enhance the customer experience, win new business, and future-proof Chevron Marine Lubricants.

  • Responsible and accountable for product-port offerings directing the activities of Supply Chain and P&T to generate an optimal balance of the customer experience with cost-to-serve and prevalence of 3rd-party substitutions.

  • Intervene in distinct situations where product pricing involves higher level marketing strategy, requiring the shaping of customer behaviors in the short- and medium-term horizons.

  • Coach and mentor key stakeholders in the marine lubricants and P&T teams to develop as subject matter experts (SMEs) in key areas able to support and promote sales initiatives. 

  • Key contributor to the Brand Extension team and initiative ensuring that Global Marine is fully represented in global brand extension opportunities.

  • Engage with stakeholders and support groups to align marine strategy with available resources and identify synergies to grow enterprise value.

  • Support regional sales teams with key and strategic customer interactions growing/enhancing relationships and focusing on long term partnership.

Enterprise Capability Development

  • Enhance the customer experience as the person responsible for sensing and scanning in the marine fuels and lubricants segment. This requires interacting with customers, prospects, and OEMs in a way that is integrated with interactions with internal SMEs in the commercial, technical, and lubricants value chain.

  • Work closely with P&T and the Alliance Strategy Team (AST) so that the organization can effectively execute the P&T Innovation Cycle for marine lubricants. Act as the linchpin for customer and market insights to enable effective teaming at multiple layers in the organization

  • Demonstrate ownership of the Vision, Sensing & Scanning, Portfolio Planning, and Prioritization aspects to the P&T Innovation Cycle.

  • Chair the Marine Strategic Working Team (MSWT), ensure productive teaming between Marine sales, Marine P&T, Chevron Oronite, Chevron Base Oils, etc. to maximize enterprise returns.  Team with the Senior Manager, Regional Managers, and horizontal organization leads to develop/refresh Marine Lubricants strategic framework.

  • Represent Chevron Marine Lubricants as the main spokesperson for our products and services. This includes collaborating with media agencies to generate and promote new content, deliver keynote addresses at conferences, actively engage the industry via social media (e.g., LinkedIn).

  • Play an active role in the Marine Digital Innovation Committee responsible for productive teaming between account management, inside sales, and supply chain with Marine IT. Ensure that the voice of the customer is incorporated into IT solution design within the agile development work. Provide input to the strategic priorities and framework for future Marine IT development activity.

  • Member of the Global Marine & Europe Leadership Team.

Global Market and Customer Planning for New Buildings

  • Provide leadership of Chevron Marine Lubricants’ sales process and results for the New Build segment globally. Global New Build market segment includes approximately 2,000 to 2,500 new vessels per year.

  • Team with the Business Support department to develop annual targets for the number of New Builds, the sales and operating income  generated from New Buildings.

  • Develop and monitor vessel new build trends to develop annual New Build targets and longer-term strategy for the market. Responsible for the advanced segmentation framework for new builds using future fuels such as methanol, hydrogen, and ammonia.

  • Identify key global influencers for New Builds purchase decisions in the Shipyards and among OEM’s; develop and lead execution of a plan for Chevron Marine Lubricants to leverage the effect of influencers for the sales of Chevron Lubricants to the New Builds sector. Team with the New Build specialists to meet and exceed customer expectations and improve our fulfilment capabilities.

  • Contribute market insights and industry knowledge to the marketing programs to support achievement of sales and profit targets.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in business, marketing, or engineering required.

  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience

  • Experience with digitization and innovation

  • English fluency and ability to communicate with non-native English speakers.

  • Ability to travel up to 50% (domestic and international)

Relocation Options:

Relocation will not be considered within Chevron parameters.

International Considerations:

Selected candidate will work under the local payroll system and benefits.
