Responsibilities

The Sr. Legal Counsel BSMX provides senior management with effective advice on business strategies and their implementation and retains and oversees the work of outside counsel.  This position is directly involved in business transactions, negotiating critical operational contracts, employment matters, and key litigation. The responsible of this role will provide continuous and timely updates to the Legal Director & Chief Compliance Officer, BS-LAN and the General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer, Latin America (based in Nashville, Tennessee). 

 

The position requires strong cross-team collaboration and coordination with business clients, multifunctional partners and legal colleagues. As expert in the field, it will be required and expected to act with integrity, be comfortable engaging in difficult conversations with the business team and able to identify and address legal issues as they arise in a professional and timely manner.

 

The role is based in Mexico City and will have overall responsibility for the legal and compliance affairs of Bridgestone operations and subsidiaries in Mexico, reporting directly to our Legal Director & Chief Compliance Officer, BS-LAN. Areas of legal responsibility will be varied and include contract and commercial law, procurement, employment law, litigation, tax, environmental and anti-corruption.  The compliance services would include supporting tactical implementation of the Bridgestone Americas Ethics & Compliance Program, coordinating and performing audits/reviews to test compliance and investigating reports of alleged noncompliance to final resolution.

 

Main Responsibilities: 

  • Be part of a diverse team of lawyers in Mexico, Costa Rica (Latin America North) and also part of a global Law Department.
  • Serve as a strategic business partner to the business by providing continuous counsel and guidance on legal matters and on legal implications of business initiatives.
  • Assist with commercial and procurement contracts, as well as employment and union matter.
  • Build a trusted advisor relationship with the business on a variety of topics, beyond legal risk assessment.
  • Support litigation and environmental claims, including working effectively with outside counsel.
  • Support the company’s Compliance Program, including supporting investigations relating to alleged or actual violations of the Code of Conduct and providing education and training to the business on best practices for compliance and ethics.

Qualifications

Mandatory qualifications:

  • Admitted to practice law in Mexico.
  • Minimum of seven to ten years’ experience in the legal profession, ideally between both a law firm and a multi-national corporate legal environment.
  • English proficiency certificate.
  • Experience with the following areas of law: commercial law, procurement law, employment & labor relations, claims/litigation management and anticorruption, logistics contracts, finance law.
  • Experience supporting legal matters and working with outside counsel in Mexico.
  • Experience working as in-house counsel for another multinational company.
  • Experience with cost-effective management of outside legal resources.
  • Experience representing a corporate entity to a variety of governmental authorities (federal, state, local).
  • Compliance comprehension

  • Technical Legal Skills: Demonstrated ability to advise on a breadth of significant legal and business matters; a results-oriented attorney licensed to practice in Mexico and with a demonstrated intellect, vision, and judgment; commitment as senior lawyer and advisor; demonstrable presence and gravitas, derived in large part from subject matter expertise; confident and experienced in leading difficult conversations as necessary;
  • Client Orientated Approach: It is critical that the successful candidate values the “hows” of providing legal and compliance support to the business. Must be client orientated in approach and demonstrate a strong desire to understand the business objectives and challenges.
  • Business Acumen: Demonstrated skill in providing legal services to support a fast-moving business with a well-defined culture; a lawyer who uses knowledge of the law and business to advise on risk/reward trade-offs evaluating legal issues in the context of larger enterprise business goals.
