About This Role

As the Director, Finance Head of Clinical Portfolio, you'll play a pivotal role within the R&D Finance team, reporting directly to the Head of R&D Finance. This position involves managing a dynamic team of six direct reports and offers substantial exposure to senior leadership, including the CFO and Executive Committee. Your primary responsibility will be financial ownership of the Clinical Development Plan (CDP) and overall R&D program spending. You will work closely with Senior R&D leaders to shape and influence strategic investment decisions, providing critical financial insights to drive effective decision-making. Your strategic leadership will be invaluable as you oversee the Program Financial Planning team, ensuring Biogen's clinical trials are well-supported and aligned with governance perspectives. This high-impact role requires strong financial acumen, management skills, and the ability to multitask effectively within a complex organizational structure.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the financial partner to R&D program teams, owning forecasts for program CDPs.
  • Collaborate with various key stakeholders across multiple organizations, including program teams, study teams, external CROs, and Procurement.
  • Provide financial insights to drive decision-making and assess program economics, business cases, and scenario planning.
  • Oversee clinical trials, ensuring support from a forecasting and governance perspective.
  • Approve purchase orders related to trials that have gained appropriate governance committee approval.
  • Utilize analytics and benchmarks to produce and regularly update an accurate study model.
  • Maintain fiscal vigilance on program spend and trends; identify risks and business drivers.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and participate in R&D initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with all corporate timelines and processes associated with forecasts.
  • Support Corporate in prioritizing portfolio investments.
  • Aid in business development activities on CDP costing.

Who You Are

You possess a strategic mindset with a distinctive ability to think critically and analytically. Your comfort in navigating complex matrixed environments allows you to influence effectively, particularly with senior leadership. With a high sense of urgency and ownership, your exceptional follow-through and communication skills are evident in everything you do. You are adept at quantitative analysis and modeling, and your leadership skills enable you to manage direct reports while also leading without direct authority. Your proficiency in PowerPoint and Hyperion is exceptional, and your knowledge of drug development and life sciences is evident.

Required Skills

  • BS/BA in Finance, Accounting, or an equivalent qualification. MBA preferred.
  • A minimum of ten years of progressive finance or related experience.
  • Strong financial and analytical skills.
  • Ability to shape and influence strategic investment decisions.
  • Experience working in a highly matrixed environment.
  • Distinctive quantitative and modeling skills.
  • Excellent PowerPoint and Hyperion skills.
  • Knowledge of drug development and life sciences is a must.

Additional Information

The base compensation range for this role is: $184,000.00-$253,000.00

Base salary offered is determined through an analytical approach utilizing a combination of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity.

Regular employees are eligible to receive both short term and long-term incentives, including cash bonus and equity incentive opportunities, designed to reward recent achievements and recognize your future potential based on individual, business unit and company performance.
