The Mortgage Operations AI team will be leading the efforts to streamline the loan production process, enable a fully digital financing experience, and provide consistent, unbiased, and personalized loan recommendations. It will make the home-buying process less daunting and more manageable while allowing Zillow to scale its mortgage business and help Loan Officers build great relationships by providing buyers the best loan product that works for them.

About the role
Zillow is looking for an experienced leader to help us transform the home financing process. As manager of the Mortgage Operations AI team, you'll lead a skilled team of applied scientists, software developers, and machine learning engineers working together toward achieving significant impact. You'll need to bring your curiosity and willingness to work through ambiguity as we introduce AI and ML to a complex domain.
You Will Get To
- Lead and develop a team of machine learning scientists and engineers
- Become an expert in the home financing/mortgage origination process from end to end
- Partner closely with ZHL's and AI product leaders on the vision, strategy, prioritization, and execution for our "mortgage factory"
- Contribute to the long-term vision for AI and Machine Learning in Zillow Home Loans
- Collaborate with principal scientists and engineers to design and implement solutions to achieve shared technical vision.
- Foster a culture of innovation and collaboration in the team while maintaining high standards for quality and accountability
This role has been categorized as a Remote position. "Remote" employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.
In California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $182,100.00 - $290,900.00 Annually. This base pay range is specific to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Washington state, and Washington DC and may not be applicable to other locations.
In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location.
Who you are
We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in Machine Learning and experience designing, scaling, and evolving sophisticated AI and ML systems. The candidate should have:
- Strong understanding of Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing fundamentals
- Experience with Machine Learning tools and Frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, Transformers, XGBoost, scikit-learn, etc.)
- 1+ years of management experience.
- 5+ years of experience prototyping and delivering Machine Learning products
- Vision and passion for AI and Machine Learning use cases and applications
- Excellent communication skills and a strong passion for collaboration across organizational boundaries.
- Passionate about supporting the growth and development of their team's careers.
- A graduate degree in CS, Statistics, Applied Math, or related STEM field, or equivalent experience in an applied research setting
Bonus Qualifications:
- Experience with generative AI or large language models and related technologies (knowledge retrieval solutions, for example).
- Experience collaborating with science, engineering, design, research, and product partners in a team environment.
- Experience working in a regulated financial space or in FinTech is a plus
- Publications in Machine Learning or AI-related journals and conferences
- Doctoral-level degree in a STEM-related field
