Business Development Manager, Commercial Litigation

Wilson Sonsini's Litigation Department is seeking a Business Development Manager that will be responsible for leading the marketing and business development activities for the Commercial Litigation and Appellate practices. The role collaborates with other Marketing Department functions, such as Communications, Creative Services, Events, and Marketing Technology. The ideal candidate must have strong written, analytical, and project management skills, as well as the ability to prioritize assignments and meet tight deadlines.

Capabilities/Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop and implement marketing and business development plans, including client targeting programs
  • Develop and maintain pitch materials, including PowerPoint decks and responses to RFPs
  • Advise attorneys on all stages of marketing and business development, from vetting sponsorship opportunities to preparing attorney teams for client/prospect-facing activities
  • Guide stakeholders in developing and maintaining client relationships, identifying and prioritizing specific client opportunities, and analyzing performance within the context of the firm's overall business development strategy
  • Assist with marketing and business development initiatives related to adjacent litigation practices, industry groups, and client-specific activities
  • Maintain a deep understanding of the firm's client base, including knowledge of the work being performed across practice groups and departments
  • Conduct research on markets, technologies, companies, and individuals for practice groups, industry groups, and other initiatives
  • Participate in the planning and execution of client events, speaking engagements, and sponsorships, including analyzing attendee lists, preparing tailored materials, supporting attorney follow-up, and tracking outcomes and activities in the firm's CRM system
  • Build and maintain relationships with appropriate organizations and vendors to maximize engagement and client development efforts
  • Develop and drive tactics and programs that raise the firm's internal/external visibility through events, sponsorships, public relations, and social media
  • Leverage marketing technology tools and resources to identify leads and track and manage opportunities and pursuits
  • Oversee the creation and regular updates of practice group descriptions, website content, matter and experience databases, and other collateral, with a focus on value and client benefit
  • Identify, assemble, synthesize, and update litigation matter summaries from various sources, including nominations, submissions, internal announcements, and industry publications. Leverage summaries to build succinct and standardized litigation profiles with key information to maintain accurate and relevant matters across clients, practices, and verticals.
  • Assist with the onboarding and integration of lateral partners
  • Build trusted and productive relationships with attorneys and colleagues to develop and execute practice group plans and initiatives

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role at an AmLaw 50 firm
  • Strong strategic business development focus with knowledge of core marketing principles
  • Strong commercial sense and confidence to understand the needs and expectations of attorneys and clients, as well as how the marketing and business development function can facilitate and drive goals
  • Excellent analytic, communication (verbal and written), and organizational skills
  • High level of attention to detail, and capacity to deal with complex material and concepts and manage simultaneous projects
  • Demonstrated proficiency using research tools such as CapIQ, Bloomberg Law, CourtLink, PitchBook, Lex Machina, Newsdesk, and other third-party resources and systems, and presenting analysis based on the output of these tools
  • Experience with Salesforce or other CRM system
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, with a particular emphasis on Excel and PowerPoint
  • Keen ability to "connect the dots"-draw conclusions, assess implications, and make recommendations
  • Well-developed professional interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with people at all organizational levels of the firm
  • Ability to travel as needed

The primary location for this job posting is in Los Angeles, but other locations are also listed. The actual base pay offered will depend upon a variety of factors, including but not limited to the selected candidate's qualifications, years of relevant experience, level of education, professional certifications and licenses, and work location. The anticipated pay range for this position is as follows:

San Francisco and Silicon Valley: $131,750 - $178,250 per year

Austin, Boston, Boulder, District of Columbia, Los Angeles, New York, San Diego, Seattle, and Wilmington: $119,000 - $161,000 per year

Salt Lake City and all other locations: $105,400 - $142,600 per year

The compensation for this position may include a discretionary year-end merit bonus based on performance. We offer a highly competitive salary and benefits package.
