Your responsibilities
The z/OS Programmer in the projects is expected to play a critical role in managing and optimizing Mainframe OS ensuring its reliability and efficiency.
Mandatory Skills
You need to have the below skills.
- System Installation : You'll be responsible for installing and configuring the z/OS operating system on mainframe hardware.
- Customization : Tailoring system parameters, subsystems, and components to meet specific organizational requirements.
- Maintenance Patches : Applying maintenance fixes, service packs, and updates to keep the system secure and stable.
- Version Upgrades : Planning and executing version upgrades of z/OS.
- Tuning : Monitoring system performance, identifying bottlenecks, and fine-tuning system parameters.
- Capacity Planning : Estimating resource needs and ensuring optimal utilization.
- Security Hardening : Implementing security best practices, configuring access controls, and managing user privileges.
- Compliance : Ensuring adherence to security policies and regulatory requirements.
- JES2 (Job Entry Subsystem) : Managing job scheduling, spooling, and print services.
- CICS (Customer Information Control System) : Supporting transaction processing and online applications.
- Troubleshooting : Diagnosing and resolving system-related issues, including abends and performance anomalies.
- Incident Management : Collaborating with application teams to address production problems.
- Rexx and JCL : Writing automation scripts and job control language (JCL) for routine tasks.
- Automated Operations : Implementing automated processes for system monitoring and maintenance.
- On-Call Rotation : Being available for system support and incident response.
- Emergency Handling : Resolving critical issues promptly.
Ideally, you should be familiar with
- Cross-Functional Teams : Interacting with database administrators, network specialists, and application developers.
- Documentation : Maintaining system documentation and knowledge base.
- Stay Current : Keeping up-to-date with z/OS advancements, tools, and best practices.
- Certifications : Pursuing relevant certifications (e.g., IBM Certified System Programmer).
