About Global Product and Design within Streaming and Games

Central to the mission of the Streaming and Games Team, the Global Product and Design group is responsible for the global streaming platform that supports all the video products our fans love. We plan, design, and build for connected TVs, web, mobile phones, tablets, and consoles for a large footprint of leading products and brands (Max, HBO Max, discovery+, Food Network, CNN, Golf TV, MotorTrend, Eurosport, and many more) and together with our cross-functional collaborators we operate as one company with one mission to be the premier media and entertainment leader globally.

About the Team and Role

We are hiring a Principal Product Manager to lead our efforts to optimize the client-server relationship between our direct-to-consumer streaming apps (Max, HBO Max, Discovery+) and our back-end content management systems and editorial tools. This leadership role will help us to provide the best possible customer experience and product flexibility as we scale to new markets, launch new types of services, and delight new customer segments.

You will work closely with Product peers and Engineering partners from both the Services and Client groups to ensure that requirements for product features are understood and accommodated within a flexible and future-proofed client-server platform design.

You will champion the customer experience from the server-side perspective and seek to align Product and Engineering colleagues on your vision.

Key outcomes for this role:

  • Making measurable improvements to the performance of the app user experience, including page-loading times, the freshness of data, and the smoothness of scrolling by defining and championing improvements to server-side product design and client-server behavior.
  • Improving product flexibility and reducing time to launch new features and content types by identifying, defining, and prioritizing work on modularity, performance, and functional reusability.
  • Contributing requirements to our long-term performance measurement platforms, including requirements for dashboards, metrics, and critical user journeys.

You will provide high-level vision for the domain, will own the roadmap for your area, and will communicate on behalf of the area with stakeholders and executive leadership.

The ideal candidate

The ideal candidate will have launched high-performance server-driven consumer applications with a deep understanding of the challenges faced in developing for a fragmented client application environment and at a large subscriber scale.

They would have an engineering or technical product management background and be comfortable in architectural discussions of client-server data models and principles while having a deep empathy and understanding of the end user experience and its importance to the success of the business.

They would be adept at driving strategic alignment of feature-driven Product colleagues and Engineering partners to ensure that a high-performance, high-flexibility client-server strategy is a central part of product planning and engineering architecture design.

To that end, the ideal candidate is a clear thinker, a fluent communicator of strategy, and is experienced at setting up & managing cross-organizational program rhythms and mechanisms.

They exhibit strong judgment in making trade-offs between customer and business needs short and long term. They are a collaborator that makes your team and partners more productive by sharing knowledge and helping to tie-break key strategic, technical, business, and prioritization decisions. They provide mentoring to junior and senior Product Managers, Program Managers, and Engineers, both within and outside the wider team.

Expectations

As a senior product leader at WBD, you will:

  • Partner with worldwide stakeholders to understand business and customer needs, and translate that into updates to our vision, strategy, program goals and KPIs.
  • Build and maintain a prioritized backlog of product investments, balancing short- and long-term goals.
  • Act with autonomy while navigating complex problems, where product strategy, roadmap, and technology approach are not yet defined.
  • Regularly engage stakeholders and external teams to communicate the status of various in-flight developments and anticipate the result of schedule changes to other teams.
  • Be adept at building trust and exerting product influence across teams and business units.
  • Build a culture, KPIs and audit processes for managing your team to exercise strategic thinking, move fast, and deliver consistently on both short and long-term initiatives.
  • Deliver complex product improvements as measured by their impact to the business.
  • Contribute to shaping the PM culture and be a role model for PMs across the company.

Skills / Experience

  • At least 15 years of combined Software Engineering / Product Management experience, with day-to-day understanding of the technologies and architectures involved.
  • At least 10 years of experience in Product Management.
  • 4+ years of Software Engineer or Software Architecture experience highly preferred.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills targeting execs and teams, including with docs like PRFAQs and strategy presentations.
  • Experience managing requirements for highly-available, highly-visible client-server products based on best-of-breed cloud platforms & microservices architectures.

How We Get Things Done...

This last bit is probably the most important! Here at WBD, our guiding principles are the core values by which we operate and are central to how we get things done. You can find them at www.wbd.com/guiding-principles/ along with some insights from the team on what they mean and how they show up in their day to day. We hope they resonate with you and look forward to discussing them during your interview.
