WBD Sports encompasses a wide range of sports brands and channels, reaching over 130 million people monthly in more than 200 markets and 20+ languages.

Key brands include Bleacher Report, Eurosport and TNT Sports. WBD Sports offers a comprehensive coverage of major sports events, like the Olympics in Europe, tennis Grand Slams and road cycling Grand Tours (e.g. Tour de France) across various platforms including TV and streaming services like Max and Discovery+.

Additionally, it manages and promotes 55 global events annually. TNT Sports UK features exclusive live sports such as the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of engineering managers and their teams, fostering a high-performance, inclusive, and collaborative engineering culture.
  • Set the vision for Sports Tech APIs and Microservices, defining the team's contribution at a platform/vertical level.
  • Own and drive key initiatives supporting the developer workflow and delivery of significant software and process changes.
  • Provide technical guidance and ensure architectural and code quality standards across multiple teams.
  • Contribute to and drive the technical vision and architecture for the platform, ensuring scalability, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Monitor, review, and coach manager and developer performance; conduct regular performance appraisals and provide growth opportunities.
  • Own the hiring, onboarding, and development of managers and engineers, ensuring a diverse and high-performing team.
  • Foster collaboration with cross-functional partners and other engineering teams to drive alignment on technical and product roadmaps.
  • Champion an inclusive and supportive engineering culture, promoting diversity and continuous learning.
  • Influence strategic planning and decision-making across multiple teams and broader functional areas.


What to Bring:
  • 15+ years of professional experience in software development, with at least 5 years in direct management of managers and large engineering teams (typically 25+ FTEs), preferably in a platform or API environment.
  • Demonstrated success overseeing delivery of significant software and process changes through teams of managers and ICs.
  • Strong technical background in backend development (Node.js, GraphQL, AWS, PostgreSQL, Redis, etc.) and modern development practices (TDD, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code).
  • Experience driving architectural and code quality standards, technical vision, and platform scalability.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and align cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Track record of mentoring managers and technical leaders, fostering growth and high performance.
  • Ability to work independently on complex issues, define and implement solutions, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Commitment to building an inclusive, diverse, and supportive engineering culture.
  • Proven experience operating at a senior level in a continuous delivery organization using Agile methodologies and tools (e.g., Jira).
  • Advanced understanding of troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, application design, solution development, and implementation for major business units or enterprise platforms.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical architecture and designs.
  • Strong strategic thinking, problem-solving, and data-driven decision-making skills with keen attention to detail.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems, federated APIs, and cloud-native architectures.
  • Familiarity with technologies such as Terraform, Kafka, DynamoDB, React.js, Elixir, Rust
  • Prior experience in sports technology or media platforms is a plus.


Technical Environment
  • Tech Stack: TypeScript, Node, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, AWS services
  • Development Practices: TDD, pair programming, code reviews, continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD)
  • Deployment: Automated using Terraform/Github Actions on AWS
  • Technologies Used: API portals (API Gateway, CloudFront, WAF), serverless technologies (Lambda), storage and database systems (Aurora, S3), messaging systems (SNS, SQS), Kafka
  • Agile Practices: Dailies, story detailing, planning, retrospectives
