We're looking for an experienced Senior Engineering Manager to join our Work Management Platform team at Upwork. You will direct and oversee our software engineering teams and work with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative solutions that exceed our customer's expectations.

If you're someone with experience in Agile development methodologies and has worked in teams that built products and services in zero-to-one and one-to-ten spaces that meet the needs of customers/stakeholders, 

 Your Responsibilities:

  • Building high-performing product engineering teams by recruiting, coaching, and developing team members and encouraging a culture of innovation, excellence, and continuous improvement.

  • Understanding the team's needs, knowledge distribution, and operational efficiency gaps to create plans to address the needs, improve efficiencies, and reduce risks.

  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders, including product and design, to create and manage the plans for the timely delivery of a high-quality product.

  • Oversee the technical vision and foster customer obsession.

  • Planning and road mapping to build and lead the delivery of high-impact initiatives.

  • Actively contribute to improving processes for managing execution and engineering best practices.

  • Receive coaching and help find opportunities to grow along the management track.

  • Roll up your sleeves and dive deep when necessary.

  • Identifying technical risks and opportunities, communicating them with stakeholders, and developing mitigation strategies.

  • Keeping up-to-date with industry trends and technologies to identify emerging opportunities. 

What it takes to catch our eye:

  • Engineering leadership experience as an engineering manager on a full-stack engineering team

  • You have hands-on engineering experience(senior level) building code for web & mobile applications at scale

  • You have designed and built microservice-based cloud apps and tuned for low-latency and high-reliability

  • You have a strong understanding of microservices and distributed system development

  • You have experience building or managing teams that built backend applications and services with cloud-based technologies and SaaS applications. 

  • You have led teams of about 20 software engineers

  • You have a product mindset and curiosity to gain business acumen

  • You have experience partnering with product management, design, and business stakeholders and handled executive-facing communications

  • You have been responsible for executive-level communication regarding your teams

  • Knowledge of software development methodologies such as Agile and Scrum, CI/CD release management, and other operational excellence experience.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and resolve complex technical issues.

 

The annual base salary for this position in California and Washington ranges from $215,000 - $260,000. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salary for this position in California and Washington, and individual base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Additionally, this position is eligible for the annual bonus plan or sales incentive plan and eligibility to participate in our long term equity incentive program
