General Summary:
The Vice President, Managing Director - Alternative Investments will serve as the portfolio manager of Unum's Alternative Investments. In this role, the candidate will lead the investing efforts and serve as head of the Alternative Investments group. This role requires strong analytical and critical thinking skills, significant investing experience across multiple asset classes, and the ability to assess relative value within the context of building and maintaining a balanced portfolio to meet the clients' desired risk and return objectives. This position will work extensively with external partners to source and execute investment strategies. Additionally, this position will collaborate with internal partners to ensure timely delivery of investment reporting, positioning, and results. It is expected that this position will manage and mentor analysts within the Alternative Investments group.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Source, evaluate, and implement alternative investment strategies with a focus on risk, long-term return potential, diversification, volatility, capital/tax efficiency, and other client-specific considerations.
- Manage and monitor existing portfolio of investments, conducting ongoing evaluations of past and expected performance including stress/scenario analysis.
- Collaborate and communicate with a variety of internal partners such as senior management, investment strategy, ALM, and internal clients.
- Analyze the various risk factors associated with investment opportunities. Anticipate economic trends, market factors, interest rate sensitivity, etc. to evaluate and act on their implications for the investments.
- Oversee investment and operational due diligence (evaluating both quantitative and qualitative factors) on third-party fund managers, including on-site visits, coordinating with Unum's legal, tax and compliance groups where appropriate.
- Develop and manage external network for sourcing new investment ideas.
- Oversee all investment recommendations and present them internally for Investment Committee approval.
- Negotiate investment documents, working with internal and external legal counsel.
- Keep apprised of emerging industry trends and themes in alternative asset management and perform ad-hoc research projects as needed.
- Contributes to the development of overall departmental investment strategy by active participation in the Investment Committee, a subcommittee to the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors.
- Provide ongoing performance reporting at the fund and portfolio level, as well as ad hoc reports required by the client; deploy and utilize software as may be required to develop appropriate reports.
Job Specifications
- Education level - MBA and CFA preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of investments, the economic environment and current regulatory environment.
- A minimum of 12 years of experience in investment management.
- Extensive experience in alternative asset management and portfolio construction, with track record of successfully analyzing and implementing a diverse set of investments. An understanding of the insurance company framework, including the generation of exposure to alternative investments in a capital efficient manner, is helpful.
- Strong technical skills to partner with asset and liability management, legal, tax and accounting contacts.
- Strong math, analytical and modeling skills.
- Strong written and verbal skills; as well as people and general management skills.
- Strong negotiation, persuasion and partnering skills.
- Ability to positively influence our corporate image in the marketplace.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$163,700.00-$336,000.00
Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not.
