General Summary:
Unum is seeking a Software Engineer II to join our Broker Connect team, a collaborative, high-performing group supporting the evolution of our broker-facing technologies. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead a specialized project with long-term visibility, while also growing into broader application development initiatives within a modern Agile environment.
This position will focus initially on enhancing and transitioning a critical internal Excel-based tool. The current tool is written in VBA within Excel. You will help modernize it, first by optimizing the Excel version, then by designing and building a scalable, web-based application using .NET and React. You will eventually transition into broader project work with the Broker Connect team, contributing to application development and API integration.
Location: 2 days onsite per week at our Portland, ME, Chattanooga, TN or Columbia, SC campus
Work hours: 7AM-4PM
Qualifications
- 4+ years of hands-on experience in .NET development
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in React (JavaScript or TypeScript)
- 1+ year of experience working with VBA within Excel, especially for business process automation or internal tooling
- Experience or interest in transforming Excel-based tools into modern web applications
- Strong experience with API development and maintenance
- Familiarity with Azure, AWS, or Windows Server
- 2+ years working in an Agile environment; comfortable with ceremonies and sprints
- Experience using SDLC tools such as Jira or Rally (training can be provided)
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- Ability and willingness to work across the stack; frontend and backend exposure is highly valued
- Effective communicator with strong written and verbal skills
- Adaptable, collaborative, and excited by continuous learning and team success
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in daily standups and Agile ceremonies across onshore and offshore teams
- Enhance, maintain, and eventually modernize an Excel-based VBA tool for internal plan setup workflows
- Help re-architect the VBA tool into a scalable cloud-based solution using React and .NET
- Develop, test, and maintain backend services and APIs using .NET (C#)
- Collaborate with Software Engineers, business stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to optimize applications and transition business logic from Excel to web
- Integrate third-party and cloud-based technologies (Azure, AWS, Windows Server)
- Contribute to sprint planning, backlog grooming, and team syncs
- Create and maintain technical documentation including architecture, design, and troubleshooting guides
- Foster team connection through regular non-work check-ins and shared team values

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$73,300.00-$150,500.00
