General Summary:
This is a hybrid role with a minimum of 3 days in office at either our Portland, ME, or Chattanooga, TN campus.
Unum's Dedicated Legal Resource (DLR) team seeks an attorney who is solution-oriented, consultative in approach, knowledgeable about life, health, disability and HIPAA accepted insurance products, familiar with federal and state laws that impact our products and services and is able to distill, summarize and communicate complex information effectively and efficiently to business partners and legal colleagues.
As Assistant Vice President & Counsel, you will be part of the team responsible for providing primary legal counsel to the Unum and Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company Benefits Operations teams in all U.S. sites and on all product lines.
As AVP & Counsel, you will be a central component of the DLR team. In this role, you will act as an advisor to Benefit Operations staff and leadership on policy related questions, issues and trends. You will also work with colleagues in a variety of functions across the enterprise. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about all aspects of Unum's business, enhance legal and leadership skills, and develop an industry-wide perspective.
As an AVP & Counsel, you are required to act with the highest ethical standards and are responsible for staying current on the external environment and changes to the law impacting our businesses.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Partners with Benefits Operations to identify and address claim-related legal issues as they arise, providing real time legal guidance on a wide variety of products and issues.
- Coordinates with Benefits Operations leadership and resource partners to support and reinforce key messages and observations.
- Monitors the external environment to identify and address legal trends.
- Facilitates communication and information sharing between the front and back ends of the business.
- Analyzes and formulates positions on claims consistent with applicable case law, legislation and regulations.
- Incorporates and applies federal and state laws and regulations (including ERISA), insurance laws and regulations, and employee benefit laws affecting insurance, as well as new and emerging areas of the law such as e-commerce and privacy, to business plans and objectives.
- Provides support to designated business teams, manages workflow from and relationship with all levels of employees and management for such teams.
- Defends company interests in litigation and disputed matters; assists and supervises outside counsel.
- Keeps legal management team apprised of and solicits their input as appropriate on significant legal issues.
- Identifies law-related training needs; develops and delivers training through various mechanisms including written materials, classroom and staff presentations.
- Ensures that all business clients give appropriate attention to the Code of Conduct and Legality Policy.
- Actively participates in the development of support staff (paralegals).
Job Specifications
- J.D. (law degree) plus admission to practice law in at least one jurisdiction.
- Knowledge of the state and federal regulatory environment, including state filing and compliance requirements and processes preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities including ability to build effective working relationships with key constituents across the Enterprise.
- Insurance product knowledge preferred.
- Strong leadership skills, including strategic planning and project management preferred.
- Strong people and change management skills preferred.
- The ability to understand multiple technology applications preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$133,500.00-$274,100.00
Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not.
