As a Lead AI/ML Engineer, you will leverage state-of-the-art AI and machine learning technologies to enhance and transform operations at Optum. This pivotal role involves spearheading initiatives such as real-time settlement, medical chart processing, autonomous medical code generation, and medical image processing. You will work closely with business and operations teams to understand their needs and translate abstract concepts into actionable AI solutions. Your contributions will be instrumental in advancing key AI initiatives that positively impact healthcare systems. In this position, you will take the lead in driving innovation while also fostering your own career growth through leadership, development, and delivery.

Schedule: Full-time position with standard working hours of Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm.

Careers with Optum offer flexible work arrangements and individuals who live and work in the Republic of Ireland will have the opportunity to split their monthly work hours between our Dublin or Letterkenny office and telecommuting from a home-based office in a hybrid work model.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Leverage AI/ML technologies to transform and improve current Optum operations. This includes, but is not limited to, projects such as smart revenue management, intelligent payment platforms, medical chart processing, automated medical code generation, and medical image processing
  • Collaborate closely with business and operations teams to grasp the requirements and translate vague concepts into tangible AI solutions. Possess strong implementation skills to bring these solutions to life and work with engineering teams to build scalable, flexible product pipelines
  • Adapt to an agile, fast-paced environment, and maintain a passion for exploring and integrating cutting-edge AI technologies to support future projects
  • Your contributions will be recognized in a challenging yet supportive environment that not only defines success for your current role but also provides opportunities for development in areas you're interested in
  • Mentor team members that will be working on the same project
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders regarding requirements and outcomes

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Math/Statistics, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Bioinformatics, or another technical field that provides mathematical training
  • Expert level proficiency in analyzing business challenges and designing AI-driven solutions
  • Expert level proficiency in at least one scripting language, such as Java, Python, SQL, PySpark, or C++
  • Expert level proficiency with AI/ML technologies
  • Expert level proficiency working with predictive analytics, NLP, image processing, Generative AI, or related technologies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Math/Statistics, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Bioinformatics, or another technical field that provides strong mathematical training
  • Ability to find AI solutions for undefined problems

Soft Skills:

  • Ability to be a fast learner and self-driven
  • Ability to work independently on complex AI projects
