Uber is seeking staff-level engineering candidates with a proven breadth and depth of experience to help take our storage systems to the next level. In return, we offer an unmatched opportunity to find the challenges that will take you to the next level.

The Storage Platform team builds and operates Uber's online storage. We use a mix of internally-developed systems (Schemaless, Docstore) and open-source software such as Cassandra and MySQL. We are embarking on a journey to modernize our database for its next generation and evaluating opportunities to introduce new systems and components that will take us to the next level in scalability, efficiency, availability, and ease of use.

What the Candidate Will Do ----
  1. Provide technical leadership in architecting and building mission-critical distributed storage systems which underpin Uber's global operations
  2. Collaborate with others, from talented team members within your group, through smart technologists across product lines, to responsible leaders across Uber. Build up positive relationships with people in the organization, meaningfully collaborating and building trust
  3. Be a role model on acting with good judgment and responsibility. Engineers across the organization will look to you on how best to plan and execute on projects
  4. See the big picture and identify strategically important problems, inefficiencies or opportunities for meaningful improvements. Drive alignment on how to tackle these and deliver high leverage solutions on these at the group and organization level
  5. Ability to think broadly and to build alliances across teams; fierce but optimistic in pursuit of the best solution
  6. Obsession with understanding what your customers need and making what you build delightful for them to use.
  7. Dedication to automation and to engineering production systems for reliability and operability. Up the bar on sustainable engineering by improving best practices, producing best-in-class code, documentation, testing and monitoring

---- Basic Qualifications ----
  1. Bachelor's degree or higher in an engineering field (e.g. Computer Science, Computer Engineering, etc.).
  2. 8+ years of experience in building large scale distributed systems in a high caliber environment
  3. Experience in programming languages such as Java, Go or Python
  4. Experience in scalable storage and working with databases
  5. Deep expertise in systems engineering at scale in storage or related domains.
  6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write detailed technical documents.
  7. Passionate about building systems that are both powerful and easy to use.

---- Preferred Qualifications ----
  1. Experience building or operating NewSQL databases at scale, such as TiDB
  2. Deep experience building distributed systems at scale. For example, know the tradeoffs of different sharding and replication strategies; can reason about data consistency in a distributed environment; and know some consensus algorithms and/or at least tried studying Paxos
  3. Proven track record as reflected by attainment of Staff Engineer level or above on a premier tech company engineering ladder, or comparable achievement elsewhere.
  4. Experience working with open-source projects and ecosystem
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write detailed technical documents
  6. Track record of leading successful teams. Growing, motivating, and inspiring the people around you!
  7. Customer obsessed and collaborative within and across teams to meet customer needs. Optimistic in the pursuit of the best solution!

For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$223,000 per year - USD$248,000 per year.
