Program Manager, AV Operational Safety
About the Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Operational Safety Program Manager to support the establishment and maintenance of an effective safety program targeted to fleet operators in the fast-evolving field of autonomous mobility and delivery at Uber. This role requires a strong understanding of the core concepts of a safety management system as tailored to autonomous vehicle operations both with and without vehicle operators (i.e. rider only or driverless) and knowledge of the relevant industry standards that inform these activities. The successful candidate will have direct experience supporting the establishment and execution of one or more safety programs under an overarching safety management system framework and strong familiarity with safety concern reporting, incident response protocols, oversight programs for vehicle operators, safety performance metrics, business continuity planning, and safety assurance.
In this role, you will be responsible for supporting the development and execution of a safety program for AV fleet operations that assures the relevant infrastructure, operations and processes utilized in the course of AV rides and deliveries on the Uber Platform complies with safety-related regulatory requirements and conforms to industry standards and best practices that have been adopted at Uber and by our partners. This role will contribute to establishing Uber's internal safety standards and associated requirements to be applied across all of Uber's AV fleet partners operating on the Platform and will support approaches to audit conformance with those standards and requirements. This will be a highly cross-functional role, requiring collaboration with internal and external stakeholders in the complex and evolving AV space. This role will involve program management and partner engagement responsibilities with a strong focus on cross functional collaboration.
What You'll Do:
- Safety Management Expertise: Support Uber's internal stakeholders and external partners on the best practices, lessons learned and pitfalls associated with the implementation of safety management systems specific to autonomous vehicles, including the four pillars of Safety Policy, Safety Risk Management, Safety Assurance, and Safety Promotions.
- Operational Safety: Execute on and support safety programs specific to the use of vehicle operators in commercial activities.
- Program Management: Support the management of safety programs from inception to operations, ensuring adherence to timelines, key milestones, and strategic objectives. Support cross-functional teams and external partners on operational safety of AV fleets.
- Partner Engagement: Support Uber's AV partners and fleet operators to carry out Safety Assurance and Risk Management activities.
- Industry Awareness: Stay current with safety & health industry trends, is a member of professional safety associations and has a strong network of safety professionals for best practice sharing.

Basic Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in safety, engineering, or related fields.
- 3 years of professional experience in relevant field
- Operational Safety: Experience supporting or executing safety programs related to the use of vehicle operators for development, testing and operations.
- Program Management: Proven track record supporting safety programs, ideally in the AV or Aviation industry, with experience contributing to cross-functional and cross-industry teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Safety Management Expertise: Minimum of 3 years of industry experience supporting the implementation and management of safety management programs in a transportation sector (AV's, aviation, automotive, trucking, maritime, etc.)
- Communication & Relationship Building: Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills, with the ability to work across different cultures and industries
- Experience working with SMS frameworks
- Experience performing data analysis and statistical analysis of operational safety data to generate safety performance indicators
- A continuous improvement approach, with a history of quick adaptation and self-directed learning
- A passion for creating empathetic, inspiring, and innovative transportation solutions in pursuit of positive societal outcomes
For New York, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$129,000 per year - USD$143,000 per year.
For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$129,000 per year - USD$143,000 per year.
For Washington, DC-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$129,000 per year - USD$143,000 per year.
