Manager II, Data Engineering - Delivery
About the Role
Are you ready to lead high-impact global projects alongside some of the brightest engineers in the industry? Uber's Delivery organization is seeking an Engineering Manager to head our Global Data Engineering team for the Groceries and Retail vertical.
In this role, you will lead a team of Data Engineers, guiding them through a variety of mission-critical projects. You will play a key role in handling complex data challenges, ensuring the seamless delivery of data from multiple sources to Uber's systems. Your work will span multiple global projects and will involve collaborating with top-tier engineers to solve some of the most complex data problems on the planet.
As the Engineering Manager for the Groceries and Retail business vertical, you will drive the creation and optimization of data pipelines, ensuring that data flows smoothly across thousands of sources and remains consumable for internal stakeholders. You will set high standards for operational excellence and execution, ensuring the team's success through efficient processes and innovative solutions.
You'll work closely with cross-functional leaders worldwide, collaborating on high-level projects that will shape the future of our data infrastructure and data-driven decisions.
What the Candidate Will Do
- Recruit, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of data engineers, guiding technical design, execution, and professional development.
- Build high-quality, end-to-end data solutions in an agile environment, from concept to production, focusing on large-scale system implementations and complex data pipelines.
- Define and execute the technical roadmap, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, while partnering with Product, Operations, and Design teams.
- Innovate, architect, and scale solutions alongside business team, engineers, and data scientists, impacting millions of Uber customers and partners, and enhancing core user experiences.
- Oversee project delivery, ensuring timely, high-quality releases and maintaining strong technical standards.
- Help take Uber to the next level as a global engineering team!
Basic Qualifications
- Proven experience managing and building high-performing teams, with a strong track record in coaching and growing engineers.
- You've managed teams of 5-10 engineers and guided them through large-scale engineering projects
- Ability to drive projects efficiently and turn potential blockers into opportunities. You excel in a fast-paced environment, adapting quickly and executing with high attention to detail and organization.
- A strategic mindset with the ability to think several steps ahead, balancing short-term execution with long-term goals.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to lead teams effectively, align stakeholders, and drive project success.
- 4+ years of engineering management experience, with 7+ years in engineering roles
- Biased toward action, with the ability to execute and deliver on the product roadmap while maintaining focus on prioritization and impact.
Preferred Qualifications
- You've led a data engineering team
- Experience working at large companies (10k+)
- Experience with international stakeholders
- Strong background on building distributed systems
- Experience in working on large-scale distributed systems. We use Hadoop/HDFS, Spark, Kafka, Samza, Cassandra
