Engineering Manager II, Merchant Optimization
About the Role
As an Engineering Manager for merchant optimization, you will play a pivotal role in building systems that drive the best merchant selection for consumers and enable merchants to participate in the marketplace with effective pricing and operational tools. You will partner closely with product and science teams to deliver scalable solutions that support merchants in achieving their business objectives while driving growth and profitability for Uber's Delivery business.
This role is critical in shaping Uber's technical direction through robust system design, high-quality execution, and a strong focus on reliability and scalability. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in distributed systems, experimentation platforms, and marketplace technologies, along with strong leadership skills to mentor and guide a high-performing engineering team.
What You Will Do
- Lead and mentor a team of senior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and impact.
- Architect and deliver large-scale systems that power merchant selection, pricing, and marketplace optimization.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with science, product, and operations teams to translate ideas into reliable, production-ready systems.
- Define and monitor key technical success metrics, ensuring systems meet both business goals and reliability standards.
- Advocate for best practices in system design, code quality, observability, and operational excellence across the organization.
- Drive the development of frameworks, tools, and platforms that accelerate experimentation and decision-making.
- Partner with Science and Product teams to integrate models, enhance data pipelines and dashboards, and ensure scalability of marketplace solutions.
- Communicate effectively with leadership and cross-functional partners, showcasing the Engineering team's work on systems, platforms, and technical solutions.

---- Basic Qualifications ----
- B.S./M.S. degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical fields.
- Minimum 7 years of industry experience as a Software Engineer or equivalent (5+ years if holding an advanced degree).
- Experience designing and building large-scale distributed systems, experimentation platforms, or marketplace technologies.
- Minimum 2 year of experience managing a team of Engineers, with strong people leadership skills including growing and mentoring team members.
- Proficiency in modern programming languages such as Java, Go, or Python, and experience with large-scale data processing frameworks (e.g., Spark, Flink).
- Strong foundation in system design, scalability, and reliability engineering.
- Bias to action and proven track record of delivering high-quality, production-ready systems.
- Experience working cross-functionally with Product, Science, and Operations teams to translate ideas into scalable solutions.
- Background in tech or marketplace industries.
- Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to translate complex requirements into robust technical solutions.
- Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing engineering teams.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders.

- Experience in a marketplace, ride-sharing, or delivery platform.
- Knowledge of reinforcement learning, optimization algorithms, or econometrics.
- Prior experience working with large-scale distributed systems and real-time data processing.
- 2+ years of experience in managing a team of senior engineers with strong people leadership skills including growing and mentoring your team members.
For New York, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$223,000 per year - USD$248,000 per year.
For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$223,000 per year - USD$248,000 per year.
For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$223,000 per year - USD$248,000 per year.
