Chief of Staff, MAD Eng & Science

2 days ago San Francisco, CA

About the Role

As Chief of Staff to the CTO you will take on an unusually wide range of responsibilities to support the organization's leaders. Specifically you will be responsible for supporting and improving the CTO's effectiveness through planning, prioritization, and coordination of executive action items. You will also serve as a critical partner for senior leaders - defining and managing the cadence of business as well as coordinating and connecting teams and work streams to ensure the business is moving quickly and in the right direction. You will serve as a program manager for special projects, working with a vast array of stakeholders on both the strategic vision and project execution. This is an awesome opportunity to innovate and build new structures to support a relatively new leadership team.

This role requires a highly resourceful, sharp, organized, discrete, self-driven individual with the ability to partner, execute, and lead through influence, analytical reasoning, and quick problem solving.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and optimize the rhythm of business: Design and manage the operational cadence of Uber Tech, curating agendas and content for leadership meetings, bi-annual planning sessions, strategy reviews, offsites, all hands, and hackathons. Ensure these forums are structured to drive alignment, foster engagement, and deliver measurable outcomes
  • Planning and execution: Build and operationalize bi-annual planning processes for Engineering and Science priorities, ensuring initiatives are measurable, resourced, and accountable. Collaborate with Finance and HR to align investment, track performance, and drive predictable execution
  • Tech communication strategy: Define, shape, and execute Uber Tech's communication strategy-both internal (all hands, leadership updates, engagement campaigns) and external (thought leadership, industry positioning). Act as a key partner to the Comms team to ensure clarity, consistency, and impact.
  • Engagement and culture: Drive organizational engagement efforts, including hackathons, efficiency drives, and leadership-sponsored initiatives that inspire innovation, foster collaboration, and reinforce a culture of excellence
  • Headcount and talent strategy: Partner with Finance, HR and Talent Acquisition to define and execute global headcount strategy. Oversee optimization of recruiting processes and workforce planning to ensure the right talent is in place to deliver on Uber Tech's priorities
  • Decision-making velocity and efficiency: Identify critical business challenges, develop metrics and dashboards, and ensure leaders have the right data to enable nimble, accountable, and informed decision-making
  • Strategic initiatives: Lead and execute strategic projects on behalf of the CTO and leadership team, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with Uber Tech's long-term goals
  • Representation and communication: Represent the CTO in meetings and forums as needed, communicating priorities, decisions, and outcomes across stakeholders. Deliver insights and updates to leadership and the broader organization through presentations, written updates, and structured messaging
  • Cross-functional leadership: Partner closely with engineering, product, data science, finance, HR, talent acquisition, other Chiefs of Staff and communications teams to drive alignment, resolve challenges, and accelerate execution of priorities
