Who we're looking for

Toyota's Powertrain Calibration & Evaluation 1 (PCE1) Department is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Engine Calibration Engineer.

The primary responsibility of this role is to calibrate the engine control systems to meet Toyota, regulatory, and customer requirements.

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Emission Calibration, the person in this role will support the PCE1 department's objective to calibrate world class powertrains in America.

What you'll be doing

  • Collaborate with a diverse calibration team to execute engine control development activities, ensuring compliance with North American and global market requirements.
  • Conduct engine calibration in accordance with established procedures to achieve regulatory compliance and performance targets, including emissions, fuel economy, and OBD.
  • Develop and manage calibration schedules and resource allocation to meet project deadlines.
  • Collect and analyze data; prepare and present technical reports regularly.
  • Perform software logic and value confirmation activities prior to critical ECU milestones to ensure high-quality calibration outputs.
  • Review and understand engine control logic from C-source code and specification documents (specbook) to effectively support calibration development and troubleshooting.
  • Work closely with related powertrain teams, including teams in Japan, to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Develop and document new procedures and tools for testing, data analysis, and calibration processes.
  • Build strong professional relationships with related vehicle departments to facilitate collaboration.
  • Support emission homologation to ensure successful certification outcomes.
  • Conduct vehicle testing and development under various environmental and tolerance conditions to meet U.S. emission certification requirements.

What you bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, or other related technical disciplines.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience in engine calibration.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience in tailpipe emissions and U.S. Federal and California regulations.
  • Understanding of internal combustion engine theory, engine control system operation, and emission homologation requirements.
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink and programming languages such as C/C++.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience investigating technical issues and developing effective solutions.
  • Excellent driving record.
  • Proficiency with data acquisition tools (e.g., INCA, Vehicle Spy).
  • Willing to work overtime (up to 20%, including weekends) and travel domestically and internationally.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and a problem-solving mindset.
  • Familiarity with emission regulations applicable to the U.S. and other market.

Added bonus if you have

  • Master's degree (or higher) in Engineering, Electrical, Computer Science, or other related technical disciplines.
  • Experience calibrating engine controls for international markets (e.g., Japan, Europe, China).
  • Experience in emission, drivability, or OBD calibration for hybrid powertrains.
  • Familiarity with software management practices.
  • Hands-on experience with vehicles through SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), co-op programs, or similar.
  • Knowledge of Model-Based Design processes.
  • Experience in handling big data.
  • Proficiency in additional programming languages such as Python, VBA.
  • Japanese language skills.
  • Familiarity with automotive testing standards and methodologies (e.g., ISO, SAE).
  • Participation in industry conferences or technical committees related to emissions and calibration.
  • Ability to thrive in culturally diverse environments.
  • This position requires an onsite presence Monday through Thursday Ann Arbor location Monday through Thursday and optional remote work on Fridays, contingent on the needs of the business.
