Why This Role Matters

The Washington Post Opinions section is looking for a sharp, experimental journalist to serve as audience strategy editor for newsletters. This editor will manage Opinions' newsletter portfolio, ensuring they are vital products for audiences and identifying areas for experimentation and growth.

Newsletters are a crucial way to connect with readers where they are and help them forge connections with Post journalists. As a member of the Opinions audience team, this editor will develop and hone strategies for email products, with a focus on offering dynamic, varied inbox experiences. They will also undertake shared team tasks around planning, promoting and optimizing opinion journalism for digital audiences on the website and other channels.

The ideal candidate has experience using analytics and data to shape strategy; experimenting with new formats and ways of fostering community; designing experiences to engage with more paying users; and working cross-functionally to optimize our tools and products. They should also be able to adjust to new workflows and systems and make the most of those changes.

How You'll Support the Mission
  • Strategize and execute on the best ways to deliver opinion journalism directly to inboxes.
  • Reinvent our newsletter portfolio by developing and refining email products.
  • Design plans to launch newsletters and continuously expand their audiences.
  • Edit and produce newsletters for clarity, accuracy and engagement.
  • Analyze audience data and clearly communicate actionable insights to newsletter writers.
  • Test new formats and find ways to highlight video, audio and multimedia content in email.
  • Work cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Client Solutions and Growth departments to optimize workflows and maximize revenue opportunities.
The Skills and Experience You Bring
  • 2+ years of experience with a news organization, especially working on newsletters or in an audience engagement role.
  • Experience using analytics to measure success and inform decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills and a can-do spirit that allows you to work across teams.
  • A track record of innovation and growth around coverage lines, products or verticals.
  • A collaborative mindset and a willingness to try new approaches in a fast-evolving media landscape.

The salary range for this position is:
$85,100 - $127,700 Annual

The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
