Job Description
The Washington Post is seeking a Deputy Head of Visuals to elevate our visual storytelling across the newsroom and lead a team of six senior visuals editors. This editor will also play a key role with our newly created Hub, shaping how we present and promote journalism on our site and across platforms.
The ideal candidate has a track record as a collaborative, ambitious and innovative storyteller in a fast-paced news environment. They must bring sharp editorial judgment, tons of ideas and the ability to execute them, an impeccable visual sensibility and experience leading others in creating best-in-class presentations. This editor must also be skilled at building relationships and sharing expertise to help others think visually and creatively in how we reach audiences.

In this role, the deputy head of visuals will work closely with the D.C. Hub's managing editor, department heads in graphics, design, photo and video, as well as senior audience editors, to ensure our reporting is visually compelling, responsive, strategically resourced and meeting our audiences wherever they may be.
Responsibilities:
- Lead a team of visual editors who are embedded across the newsroom.
- Advocate for the importance of visual journalism within The Post. This includes working with editors and leadership to ensure that visual storytelling continues its trajectory as a valuable and essential part of The Post's editorial mission.
- Serve as key collaborator with visual and data departments across the organization.
- Drive ambition and experimentation in all our work.
- Conceive and execute ideas while fostering experimentation in our storytelling across platforms.
- Create opportunities for visual storytellers to grow and gain new skills.
- Educate editors and reporters on creating immersive and alternative story forms.
- Ensure a supportive work culture that allows individuals and teams to thrive.
- Be audience-centric, especially in looking for opportunities for personalization.
- Develop strategies to optimize workflows and tools.
- Contribute significantly to The Post's comprehensive visual storytelling strategy.
- Ensure all visual teams are analyzing the same list of stories to optimize the strength of presentation.
- Working with the Head of Visuals, set the vision and strategy for our Senior Visuals Editors and continue to adapt as the newsroom evolves.
- Work closely with the Hub managing editor and team to ensure our visual work shines across platforms.
- At least 10 years of professional experience creating and overseeing visual journalism, including design, photo, video and graphics.
- A track record of success in developing and implementing innovative visual storytelling strategies in the media industry.
- A collaborative, entrepreneurial spirit.
- Experience organizing and editing journalists on deadline and handling multiple projects with overlapping timelines.
- A deep understanding of the ethical considerations involved in visual journalism.
- An eye for clarity in articulating design decisions, with a passion for creating clear, reader-focused digital experiences.
- A strong understanding of tools and techniques used to create multimedia and data-driven storytelling.
- A vision for how visual journalism can connect with current and future audiences across digital surfaces and experiences.
- An engaging and empathetic approach to leadership.
- Excellent communication skills.

The starting salary range for this position is $161,000.00 - $230,200.00 USD. The actual starting salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
The Washington Post's policy for employees is five days per week in the office, with exceptions for newsgathering and general business travel.
