We have an exciting opportunity for a European IP Counsel to join our Specialty Diagnostics Group's (SDG) IP team supporting one or more European-based Divisions within the Group.

As European IP Counsel you will lead strategic and pragmatic patent portfolio development, including identifying, managing and addressing patent opportunities and risks in a dynamic and commercially active environment. You will also provide IP training and general IP support at multiple European SDG sites and support European oppositions as required. This role will closely collaborate with legal, R&D, and business teams.

We are happy to offer the role as fully remote (working from home), based anywhere in Europe. Some international travel may be required - up to 10% per annum, including overnight stays. European Qualified patent attorneys at law firms are encouraged to apply.

Our Organisation:

This role sits within our Specialty Diagnostics Group (SDG). With over 40 locations worldwide, the divisions within SDG focus on in vitro diagnostics including test kits, reagents, culture media, instruments, and associated products to serve customers in health care, clinical, pharmaceutical, and industrial laboratories.

What will you do?

  • Play a leading role in innovation sensing, preparation and prosecution of patent applications, freedom to operate assessments, and identification of trade secrets for the assigned business(es) in our Specialty Diagnostics Group
  • Competitive analysis and IP landscaping to include providing pragmatic and actionable advice on competitor IP risks and mitigation strategies
  • Provide pragmatic and actionable advice on transactions, disputes and oppositions, risks and outcomes, and collaborate with internal commercial, R&D and IP teams to adapt priorities and strategies
  • Collaborate with internal teams to improve existing processes and lead development of new ones
  • Work collaboratively across organizational and geographic boundaries including management of outside counsel
  • Other duties as assigned to support Thermo Fisher's Mission and the IP department

Who we are looking for:

  • UK or European qualified patent attorney with at least 5 years of successful patent preparation and prosecution practice in Europe focused in the life sciences and/or diagnostic space. Patent opposition experience is a plus
  • Experience in Freedom to Operate analyses and other risk mitigation activities
  • Experience with contracts of simple to medium complexity
  • Fluent in English language required. Multi-lingual preferred (European languages)
  • Undergraduate degree in the life sciences, engineering, or related subject area. Advanced degree in one of these fields and/or experience with diverse technologies preferred. Demonstrated ability and eagerness to learn new technologies
  • Strong situational awareness to adjust communication style and risk tolerance and re-calibrate strategies around business priorities
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills, including tailoring communication approaches to audiences of varying legal and technical sophistication
  • Strong initiative, collaborative/team instinct, and can-do mindset
