About the Role
Under the general supervision of the Supervisor and/or Assistant Supervisor - Communications, and/or the Communications Foreman, the incumbent assists Communications Repairmen I and II and Communications Technicians in the performance of manual and semi-skilled duties related to the communications field.

Responsibilities
Typical duties may include but are not necessarily limited to:
- Assist in the assembly, installation, testing, maintenance, alteration, dismantling, and/or repair of a variety of audio, video, and data communications equipment, wire and cables, electronic systems, and circuits.
- Cut, bend, thread, and install conduit, raceways, and related hardware. Drill holes, install hangars, and perform other field construction work using hand and power tools. Clean and paint junction boxes and electronic housings.
- Check telephones, intercoms, radios, CCTV monitors and other communication devices and equipment for proper operation.
- Assist in response to emergencies, unusual occurrences, or weather affecting communications.
- Pick-up and transport personnel, materials, equipment, and tools between various locations and work sites in the Port District using a PATH vehicle.
- Work at elevated heights from ladders and bucket trucks; work in severe weather conditions; work in tunnels adjacent to active electrified tracks; work in cramped, slippery, dusty locations; work on all shifts and with a non-traditional workweek.

NOTE: The foregoing is not exclusive and is not meant to describe all those duties, which may be assigned to a Trades Helper/Trainee pursuant to the agreement between PATH and the IBEW.
NOTE: The successful candidate(s) will participate in an accelerated combination of on-the-job and classroom training on PATH-specific communications facilities and must pass any subsequent tests. Trades Helper/Trainee - Communications must participate in and successfully complete the training program to be eligible for promotion to the journey level classification of Communication Repairman I.
Minimum Qualifications
- A four-year standard or vocation high school diploma, or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
- Valid driver's license required.
- Candidate must also possess specialized training in the communications or electrical trade, such as successful completion of an approved communications or electrical vocational/technical/military training or apprentice program (including training in basic ac and dc electrical theory, electrical safety, schematics and diagrams, communications and electrical devices, circuit wiring, and controls, trade math, etc.) resulting in a diploma or certification. Two years of journey-level work experience in the electrical or communications trades can be used to substitute for the education requirement.
Desired Qualifications
- Ability to work rotating shifts (am, pm, midnight, weekends and holidays) and during inclement weather conditions.
Selection Process
Qualified candidates will be assessed via a written exam and interview. For this position, the following skills will be assessed:
Written Examination: The written exam is designed to measure a candidate's knowledge in areas such as:
- Electrical theory
- Maintenance, tools and equipment
- Written comprehension
- Mechanical reasoning
- Trade math
Interview Examination: The interview will consist of technical questions designed to measure such factors as interest in, and knowledge of, the position, personal qualifications for this position, and knowledge of wiring and relays in several different situations.

Starting Salary: The current starting salary for Trades Helper/Trainee - Communications is $32.36 per hour.

About PATH:
The Port Authority Trans Hudson Corporation (PATH), an FRA-regulated commuter railroad, is the primary transit link between Manhattan and New Jersey communities and suburban commuter railroads. Carrying over 75 million passengers per year, PATH trains run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, one of the few 24-hour systems in the world. Since the early 20th Century, PATH and its predecessor, the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad, have carried passengers between New Jersey and points in Midtown and Lower Manhattan, serving as a key link in the region's transportation network and as a catalyst for continued residential, commercial and employment growth.
PATH operates 24 hours per day/7 days per week/365 days per year. Employees are required to work weekends, holidays, atypical hours (evening and midnight shifts) and during inclement weather conditions. Incumbents may be subjected to mandatory overtime at the beginning or end of their scheduled tour, or on their days off. A union seniority system dictates work schedules for jobs represented by one of PATH's unions, and time off may not be immediately available during the usual summer and holiday periods. Working conditions will be challenging, including but not limited to inclement weather, direct contact with the public, in tunnel and outside areas during active train service, and an industrial environment. Commitment to attendance is expected and required.
