We have proudly built a company operating on the leading edge of the insurance industry where we expertly merge the fundamentals of insurance with the fast-paced world of tech-enabled innovation.
We are establishing an underwriting team in the Bay Area of California, in proximity to the San Francisco insurance community and the investment & technology resources in Silicon Valley. We are building on the existing Y-Risk brand as an industry leader in underwriting the innovators: delivering client centric solutions as new business models emerge. This strategic move will align with Y-Risk's mandate of "insuring tomorrow's economy" by positioning the company at the forefront of underwriting emerging technologies. This team will leverage The Hartford's deep institutional knowledge and resources through collaboration and transparency by focusing on the intersection of underwriting, data science, risk finance, risk engineering, technology, and claims.

Our team takes a nimble and creative approach to underwriting. We take the time to get to know and understand each client's business and insurance goals and use their data and exposure profile to put the best possible coverage in place. Through active data analysis, we can appropriately price risk and make necessary adjustments. In doing this, we value working closely with our customers and their brokers to communicate the benefits of our products.
We are seeking a Managing Director with expertise in strategic investments and a deep passion for emerging technologies. This position will lead a team of Underwriters that will monitor and respond to private equity investment and technological trends as they are being developed, while growing Y-Risk business and will report to the Chief Underwriting Officer & Head of Y-Risk. This team will deliver underwriting solution expertise and 360⁰ perspectives on risk to clients and producers; and create forward-thinking insurance products that meet the needs of tomorrow's economy.
The Managing Director will be accountable for continuing to drive a first principles underwriting culture, with direct responsibility for underwriting, sales leadership and broker/agency management.
Responsibilities include:
Solution Expertise and Innovation
- Identify, target, and solicit specific emerging technologies and clients.
- Seek opportunities to underwrite the business by direct solicitation to agents, brokers, and clients based on underwriting & risk analysis expertise.
- Conduct exposure & pricing-based Research & Development - organizing and categorizing exposures to identify if new underwriting & pricing methodologies are required, or if "traditional" products, pricing, and appetite apply.
- Support transparency by focusing on the intersection of underwriting, data science, risk finance, risk engineering, technology, and claims.
- Spearhead execution of the delivery of underwriting solution expertise and 360⁰ perspectives on risk to clients and brokers; and create forward looking insurance products that meet the needs of tomorrow's economy.
Financial & Strategic Investment
- Strategic planning and market analysis development, focused on investment trends and "following the money."
- Work closely with The Hartford's deep institutional knowledge base and resources to approach and evaluate the businesses and technologies that will make up tomorrow's economy.
- Close collaboration with the Director of Partnerships & Ecosystems, housed in the Y-Risk Innovation Labs, and the Emerging Technology Study Group to:
- actively engage with the local tech community
- participate in technology related industry events
- foster partnerships with leading tech companies
Sales, Agency, and Underwriting Management
- Ensure functional and regulatory integrity of the book of business and overall compliance with corporate guidelines, policies, service standards, and levels of authority.
- Work with brokers to positively influence team submission/policy outcomes.
- Travel as appropriate for book management & relationship building, (approximately once per month averaging 3-5 days per trip)
- Provide ongoing technical underwriting development through coaching and QM results analysis.
- Identify, target, and solicit specific emerging technologies and opportunities in tomorrow's economy.
- Seek opportunities to underwrite the business by direct solicitation to agents, brokers, and clients based on underwriting & risk analysis expertise.
- Actively participate in Y-Risk's highly collaborative referral frame build strong, distinctive strategic partnerships with key agents and brokers.
- Serve as an expert in technical underwriting knowledge, guiding the actions of underwriters in writing and retaining quality business.
- Inspire team to achieve profit and growth objectives through risk selection, individual account pricing, mix of business, flow of business and management of quality analysis for the team.
- Enforce utilization of applicable underwriting tools.
- Demonstrate masterly level understanding and utilization of UW & Sales reports.
- Drive consistency in underwriting routines and accountabilities that deliver proven results. These include pipeline & agency management, underwriting practices, client facing meetings, renewal retention strategies, service delivery and enterprise representation.
Talent Leadership and Development
- Foster a high performance, top quartile employee engagement and performance enablement culture; establish and monitor operating routines to maximize collaboration, team connectivity, and innovation
- Invest in attracting, building, developing and retaining high caliber talent from within or outside of the organization and motivating your team to reach its full potential.
- Ensure staff continuity for key positions by anticipating and planning for future staffing needs.
- Authentically lead staff through active performance management, implementation of a meaningful development process; build a strong team which fosters collaboration, open dialogue and involve them in critical decision making and planning activities.
- Closely manage plan results on an office-wide and individual basis and direct implementation of specific actions to address business shortfalls in both profit and growth.
Qualifications:
- 7+ years Commercial P&C insurance industry underwriting experience required. well versed in commercial auto, GL, and financial lines a plus. (Open to considering someone with carrier/broker/agent expertise in the emerging technology and emerging business model space.)
- Leadership/management experience; strong mentoring and coaching discipline and working collaboratively with internal and external constituents.
- Underwriting acumen, discipline and technical knowledge are essential.
- Superior communication skills, both oral & written; ability to deal confidently with all levels of the organization, including executive, field leadership, underwriters and business partners.
- Strong sales and negotiation skills; agency territorial management experience.
- Team player with outstanding interpersonal and organizational influencing skills; excellent stakeholder/relationship management skills and leadership behaviors.
- Superior analytical & problem-solving skills, including the ability to: encourage new ways of looking at problems, processes and solutions, develop sound recommendations for capitalizing on opportunities and improving results, and generate new ideas for profitable growth.
- Sound financial acumen, understanding of P&L, knowledge and experience with setting and driving an operating plan; track record of setting goals and delivering results.
- Graduate level, CPCU, or other industry designation or coursework preferred.
- Able to travel
- This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in the office / in market 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$144,000 - $216,000
