This position is within the Accounting Operations group which reports into the Corporate Controllers organization and is primarily responsible for the GAAP financial close. The team interacts with various business partners to ensure that GAAP financials for the Employee Benefits segment is accurate by Line of Business and on a consolidated basis. This role has great opportunity to gain exposure to multiple departments in the finance organization, including Employee Benefits FP&A, Actuarial, Group Reinsurance Plus and Treasury and will be a key contributor to the monthly financial close process. Also, as part of the team, this role will be challenged to identify process improvements opportunities and empowered to implement solutions.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office (Hartford, CT) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
Responsibilities include:
- Review, validate and understand underlying data components in certain administrative systems to ensure proper reporting of information, and support Line of Business Finance, Reinsurance and Actuarial teams with any questions.
- Review financial results by product line for reasonableness. Compare actuals to outlook and prior year and investigate material variances to understand key drivers for the movement; and to determine if adjustment to actual is needed.
- Develop, maintain, and run various system allocations and reports from general ledger and TM1.
- Perform monthly reconciliation of complex balance sheet accounts. Identify root cause of differences and propose recommendations to resolve the issue.
- Review key balance sheet line items for reasonableness, research material changes from prior period/quarter to explain the movement.
- Support quarterly and annual statutory/compliance reporting as needed.
- Support various audit needs including those to support The Hartford's policies, SOX, internal audit, external audit, or other regulatory bodies.
- Lead in the evaluation and improvement of existing processes, workflows, and procedures ensuring documentation is comprehensive enough to manage the accounts and resolve any issues.
- Lead and participate in projects impacting the financial systems which include updates to existing platforms, integration of newly purchased application, and special projects.
- Lead and participate in special projects requiring accounting expertise, conducts ad-hoc analyses as needed, and provides solutions.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field, CPA, or MBA a plus.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience preferably with a history working in insurance accounting and/or public accounting.
- Critical thinking, analytical and quantitative skills; attention to detail.
- Ability to learn quickly and work independently, but also to contribute as part of a team.
- Strong communication, technical accounting, and problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to be flexible and able to successfully balance multiple competing priorities.
- Takes ownership for meeting personal goals and objectives.
- Experience with financial systems: general ledger, financial reporting, administrative systems etc.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$74,400 - $111,600
