We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal API Software Engineer to join our team. This role is a hands-on technical position with a focus on tackling complex technical challenges and providing high-level guidance and coaching to upskill a team of engineers. The ideal candidate will have expertise in software engineering, platform engineering, API development, and integrations, with a passion for developer experience. A key focus will be enabling enterprise API modernization, working with distributed teams to enable federated API management, and operationalizing innovative technical solutions involving new technologies, including GenAI.

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office (Columbus, OH, Chicago, IL, Hartford, CT or Charlotte, NC) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Responsibilities:

  • API Developer Experience Platform Engineering: Enable the Developer Experience on API platforms to enable the enterprise to leverage the API platforms through self-service capabilities.
  • Engineering Excellence: Provide technical mentoring, pairing, and leadership to help to uplift team technical skills. Be a player-coach who can demonstrate technical skills by being hands-on and directly developing, testing, and deploying technical solutions.
  • Reliability and Incident Management: Support the stability and resiliency of critical API platforms. Mature API Platform SRE practices. Be on 24x7 on-call rotation for incidents and changes, including evenings and weekends (approximately one week each month).
  • Innovation and POCs: Ideate and execute high-value Proof of Concepts (POCs) to drive innovation and improvement. Stay atop industry trends and best practices in API development and integration.
  • Developer Community: Build strong relationships with federated API Management Teams. Prepare and present at forums, meetings, and events.
  • Continuous learning: Coach other engineering team members and contribute to a positive and engaging culture of excellence and continuous learning.

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of technical experience, engineering, application management or operations roles with a demonstrated track record of technical innovation and experience leading technically diverse teams. Prior experience leading engineering teams as a Principal Software Engineer or equivalent roles.
  • 5+ years of API and integration experience, preferably as part of a Platform Engineering Team with platforms such as Kong, API Connect, Apigee, and AWS API Gateway.
  • Deep knowledge of API design principles and best practices, API lifecycle management, cloud engineering, and full-stack software engineering.
  • Experienced in Incident Management, Structured Problem Solving, and SRE. Able to be on rotation for 24x7 on-call for complex issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in full-stack software engineering.
  • Leading engineering teams as a player-coach.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in the insurance industry and productization of insurance business capabilities.
  • Experience with Generative AI (GenAI) and Agentic AI.

Candidate must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
