As a Middle and Large Commercial Technology Underwriter, you will quarterback the sales and underwriting process by building exceptionally strong and lasting relationships with agents and brokers, ensuring that The Hartford is the carrier of choice. Success in this role will also entail effective account stewardship by managing the sales process from strategic planning to operational excellence and developing cross-sell and up-sell opportunities across the team. We have a collaborative and results oriented environment, where approachable industry leaders mentor and inspire their teams to win in the market and have fun while doing it.

We are seeking a highly skilled Underwriter, who is responsible for the following:

  • Manages and Underwrites a Middle Market Technology and Life Science book of business
  • Analyzes agency book on quarter-to-quarter basis for potential action
  • Expertly applies all applicable Underwriting guidelines when making decisions
  • Typically manages higher volume and/or higher Total Written Premium goal compared to country-wide standard
  • Capable of underwriting highly complex business and will require limited support from senior underwriters and infrequent referral activity to complete quotes
  • Has thorough knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and governance
  • Agency Management which includes creating, driving and execution of strategies for new and/or renewal accounts (prospective book management, executes on the mix strategy, low strategy, territorial and agency sales plans, etc.)
  • Acts as a trusted advisor and solution provider to Brokers and Agents
  • The territory for this role will be the NYC territory and sales travel will be required within the region.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of P&C Middle Market or Technology Carrier production underwriting experience is required; Life Sciences or E&O is a plus.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining solid relationships with all internal and external business partners.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
  • An ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations and propose solutions.
  • High energy self-starter, who is resilient and has an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Demonstration of solid time, organizational, and desk management skills.
  • Goal-oriented and delivers outcomes.
  • Ability to challenge the status quo and compete to win.
  • Superior technical knowledge and sound decision-making and analytical skills.
  • The Hartford is proud to offer a hybrid work location model that is designed to support flexibility. Candidate must be within commuting distance to the Manhattan office and market in order to meet in-person monthly/quarterly sales call objectives. Position level will be determined after careful review of the selected candidate's experience.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$95,120 - $178,680

The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
