The Middle Market Underwriting Manager of General Industries and Technology supports the execution of strategic and operating plans within an assigned geographic region and provides direct management to a team of experienced General Industry field underwriters. This role provides sales and underwriting leadership, as well as strategy development and execution to the assigned territory. They are accountable for the financial performance of an assigned territory within the region and they will report directly to the Regional Vice President. The Middle Market Underwriting Manager collaborates with multiple regional office leadership teams within the territory to drive profitable business for The Hartford, acting as a liaison with field leadership within other Middle Market business units to ensure clear communication, accountability and messaging to the external marketplace. The position is charged with contributing to an environment that supports and motivates team members to develop expert technical, sales, underwriting and customer service skills with the goal of increasing the penetration of existing agency relationships and building new relationships within the aligned market.

Key Responsibilities

Distribution Management & Sales Leadership

  • Build strategic partnerships with key agents, brokers, and clients.
  • Collaborate with Division and Regional Office leadership for agency management.
  • Implement segment sales plans and monitor execution.
  • Drive pipeline generation, client retention, and profitable growth.
  • Coach team on sales excellence and monitor performance.
  • Maintain competitive insights and leverage for agency penetration.
  • Promote brand awareness and respond to customer feedback.

Leadership

  • Directly manage and coach field underwriters.
  • Ensure strong underwriting discipline and compliance.
  • Partner with Head of Field Sales & Execution on talent strategy.
  • Attract and develop high-caliber, diverse talent.
  • Manage staff performance and development planning.
  • Foster team engagement, collaboration, and open dialogue.

Book Management, Planning & Monitoring

  • Accountable for financial performance of the territory.
  • Develop and implement strategic and operating plans.
  • Manage risk selection and pricing decisions.
  • Monitor plan results and address financial shortfalls.
  • Optimize business flow and mix for financial outcomes.

Enterprise Accountability & Underwriting Operations

  • Ensure adherence to underwriting practices and guidelines.
  • Use quality management to develop talent and ensure compliance.
  • Leverage claims, risk engineering, and service operations partnerships.
  • Champion enterprise tools and reporting systems.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of Commercial Carrier Underwriting experience; management experience preferred.
  • Strong financial and business acumen.
  • Proven leadership capabilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and internal systems.
  • Ability to travel regularly within the region.
  • Established personal brand with specialized brokers.
  • Track record of goal setting and results delivery.
  • Commitment to professional execution and efficiency.
  • Experience driving business plans and achieving results.
  • Title commensurate with experience.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Hybrid work arrangement: in-office or agency visits three days a week (Tuesday-Thursday).

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
