Purpose of the Job

The FI team is recruiting for a Senior Underwriter to join a profitable and growing business line. The role will have both personal and collective responsibility for helping support the expansion and profitability of this portfolio as the team is positioned for growth.

The individual will benefit from exposure to a broad selection of risks across the 3 lines of FI cover across a broad spectrum of territories. The position involves the underwriting of business in line with Financial Lines appetite as well as developing and maintaining relationships with London and International Brokers and clients.

Job Responsibilities & Competence

  • Support local leadership in growth and understanding of product, market and strategy
  • Underwrite new and renewal accounts to meet planned underwriting results, through proactive account review, analysis of underwriting trends and improvement plans to maintain profitability.
  • Negotiate account participation, pricing and terms and conditions with brokers.
  • Underwrite in line with Underwriting Authorities, Underwriting Guidelines, Rules and Principles.
  • Work closely with the Head of FI to drive development opportunities and achieve a balanced portfolio.
  • Drive development and execution of the FI underwriting and marketing strategies, delivering growth strategy to London based brokers.
  • Contribute to development of new products and geographic territories for expansion of the FI book without losing focus on profitability.
  • Proactively support retention of existing business through both market and one-on-one meetings with our Insureds / potential Insureds.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key Brokers & Insured's. This is to include both UK and potential overseas travel on behalf of the team.
  • Supporting coaching, training and developing of Underwriting Assistants, Assistant Underwriters and Underwriters to continually improve their technical and trading capability and development of a market leading team.
  • To keep abreast of development of claims within the FI book and marketplace, liaise with the claims team as necessary to ensure appropriate settlement of claims.
  • To contribute and lead, as required, to the periodic reporting of Underwriting results
  • Ensure accurate policy documentation is issued and filing is maintained through a close working relationship with Operations and Aggregate Modelling teams

Qualifications and Capabilities

  • Reasonable standard of education and appropriate market experience, either as a broker, underwriter, client or reinsurer for 10yrs +
  • Willingness to broaden and develop knowledge of Financial Institutions and related issues through formal and informal learning
  • Strong process management discipline. Establishes priorities, anticipates problems, determines completion dates, knows and communicates the status of assignments; manages time effectively; uses the services of others effectively.
  • Ability to develop and sustain relationships with internal and external customers, brokers and regulators
  • Knowledge, interest and understanding of Global Current Affairs (social, political, and economic)
  • Team player with a strong collaborative orientation and ability to build strong relationships across an organization ambiguity in a matrixed organization; ability to guide, influence and navigate effectively with different constituencies in achieving company goals

Experience

  • More than 10 years underwriting experience within the FI marketplace.
  • Sound understanding of the insurance market with detailed knowledge of financial institutions
  • Strong process discipline. Establishes priorities, anticipates problems, determines completion dates, knows and communicates the status of assignments; manages time; uses the services of others effectively.
  • Team player with a strong collaborative orientation; ability to build strong relationships both internally and externally to the organization.
  • Strong level of technical underwriting expertise with regards to wording, regulatory environment and financial analysis
