Join The Hartford's Enterprise Data Services organization with our talented Scrum team to help unlock Data Insights for the Chief Underwriting Office. We build solutions using Cloud technologies but source data from various environments. We are committed to the Agile delivery framework and are passionate about delivering business value through well architected innovative solutions.

As a Data Engineer, you will build innovative data solutions to help provide insights and answer key questions for our business customers. Working closely with your partner Business Analyst, you will participate in the entire software development lifecycle process in support of continuous data delivery, while growing your knowledge of emerging technologies. We use the latest data technologies, software engineering practices, MLOPs, Agile delivery frameworks, and are passionate about building well-architected and innovative solutions that drive business value. This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office location (Hartford, CT; Chicago, IL; Columbus, OH; and Charlotte, NC) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Responsibilities:

  • Lead development of high-quality data assets for business intelligence and analytics solutions
    Formulates logical statements of business problems and devise, test and implement efficient, cost-effective application program solutions
  • Identify and validate internal and external data sources for availability and quality. Work with SMEs to describe and understand data lineage and suitability for a use case, in partnership with Business Analyst.
  • Create data assets and build data pipelines that align to modern software development principles for further analytical consumption. Perform data analysis to ensure quality of data assets
  • Perform preliminary exploratory analysis to evaluate nulls, duplicates and other issues with data sources
  • Produce code artifacts and documentation using GitHub for reproducible results and hand-off to Production Support or other teams

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT, Management Information Systems, or a related discipline
  • 3+ years of experience as a Data Engineer, ideally within a data-driven or tech-focused organization.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proven ability to solve data challenges and work independently
  • GenAI Experience (Prompt engineering, RAG, LLM) a plus
  • Required - highly proficient SQL
  • Required - intermediate experience in Python
  • Experience in ingesting data from a variety of structures including relational databases, Hadoop/Spark, cloud data sources, XML, JSON
  • Experience in Cloud data warehouses, automation, and data pipelines (i.e. Snowflake, Redshift) a plus
  • Experience with EMR, CICD, GitHub, Autosys
  • Exposure to Automation tools (Autosys a plus, AWS Step Function, Airflow, etc.)
  • Exposure to AWS Services (i.e. S3, EMR, Sagemaker, AWS batch, etc.) a plus
  • Familiarity with MLOps and DevOps concepts.
  • Able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical teams
  • Able to translate complex technical topics into business solutions and strategies
  • Experience with ThoughtSpot is a plus
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable terms for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with Agile or similar project management methodologies is preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$100,960 - $151,440
