The Hartford is seeking a highly skilled and experienced leader with a strong accounting background to join our Corporate Controllers organization as the Assistant Vice President, Statutory Reporting. This role will report directly to the Vice President, Accounting Policy & External Reporting and is a key leadership position within the Corporate Controllers organization.
The AVP Statutory Reporting is responsible for accounting and reporting for 18 P&C companies and 1 Life insurance company within The Hartford. Responsibilities include closing the statutory ledger, all NAIC reporting including Schedule P and RBC, preparing statutory audited financial statements, preparing periodic outlooks for statutory surplus, RBC and dividend restrictions, state compliance reporting, and many other internal and external deliverables.

Responsibilities:
• Ensure accurate and timely production of monthly, quarterly and annual regulatory filings, management reporting and other state compliance related activities.
• Drive continuous improvement culture that prioritizes embracing identification and implementation of process improvements to simplify and streamline processes.
• Act as a champion for embracing emerging technologies, including Gen AI, and think innovatively about ways to incorporate into process improvement initiatives.
• Work collaboratively with the accounting policy team to assess and implement new accounting / reporting guidance.
• Oversee staff production of quarterly footnote disclosures for the NAIC Statements, NAIC Combined P&C and the P&C and HLA Audits.
• Oversee management of the onshore and offshore state compliance deliverables; including Department of Insurance, and Rating Agency filings, while identifying opportunities to streamline and automate these processes.
• Maintain MAR/SOX controls and seek opportunities to strengthen/improve financial controls, where applicable.
• Serve as a trusted advisor for the business while building and maintaining relationships of trust with enterprise senior leaders.
• Partner with various areas of the business to help Controllers successfully support business initiatives, including new products, and system integrations.
• Work closely with Treasury leadership to prepare and analyze results of periodic Outlooks.
• Effectively lead the team through transformative system and process changes helping the team to embrace and drive forward positive efficiency changes.
Qualifications:
The AVP Statutory Reporting must be an energetic and innovative leader to help guide our statutory reporting team into the future. Specific qualifications include:
• 12+ years of accounting experience, with insurance industry experience required; ideal candidates will also have Big 4 public accounting experience with insurance clients.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and NAIC Statutory accounting required.
• Statutory reporting experience at a mid-to-large size insurance company required.
• Property & Casualty experience strongly preferred. GAAP and/or Life statutory financial reporting experience in addition to P&C is desirable.
• Strong leadership and team management skills. Experience leading high-performing teams that work effectively under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
• Ability to lead initiatives in a matrix environment across the Controllers and Finance organization. Partner with IT Finance leadership over projects.
• Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to producing timely and accurate financial results.
• Demonstrated team player with outstanding communication, interpersonal and organizational influencing skills; excellent stakeholder/relationship management skills and leadership behavior.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and General Ledger required. Proficiency with TM1 or similar software and WDesk preferred.
• Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline required; CPA strongly preferred
Location:
This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in our Hartford, CT office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$156,000 - $234,000
