Job Description
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking a dedicated and experienced Wound Care Nurse to join the compassionate team at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital. In this vital role, you'll deliver specialized wound care to a diverse adult population aged 20 to over 100, many of whom are managing chronic medical conditions with acute flare-ups and reduced independence in daily activities. Your expertise will guide direct and indirect patient care, inform treatment plans based on hospital guidelines, and support nursing staff through supervision and clinical direction.
Please Note Scheduled Hours:
- 8-4:30pm Monday-Friday, With Weekends Off
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
- Provide specialized wound care for patients aged 20-100+ with chronic medical conditions
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care following hospital wound care guidelines
- Review patient data and design treatment plans based on individual needs and strengths
- Thoroughly document wound assessments, measurements, progress notes, and images
- Ensure timely follow-up for wound consultations and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams
- Educate staff on wound documentation, techniques, and best practices
- Participate in wound care teams, nursing handoffs, in-services, and hospital committees
- Supervise, delegate, and support staff in wound care delivery and new personnel orientation
- Communicate patient information to healthcare team members and other relevant staff
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and maintain compliance with HIPAA and regulations
- Attend mandatory education sessions, workshops, and training for continued licensure
- Use hospital equipment and supplies cost-effectively and support institutional goals
Required Qualifications:
- Knowledge of nursing practice theories and standards
- Understanding of specific medical diagnoses and appropriate treatments
- Familiarity with professional standards of care
- Awareness of laws and regulations concerning patient rights
- Skill in assigning and supervising care provided by nursing staff
- Ability to assess patient needs and evaluate nursing personnel competencies
- Effective communication skills with interdisciplinary teams
- Strong documentation abilities, including meaningful and comprehensive record-keeping
Preferred Qualifications:
- Sensitivity to the needs of elderly and long-term care patients
- Familiarity with hospital policies, procedures, and internal regulations
- Knowledge of external regulatory agencies including the Department of Health (DPH) and The Joint Commission (TJC)
- Understanding of restorative and rehabilitation nursing principles
- Awareness of hospital safety procedures and protocols
- Proven leadership abilities, including experience with charge nurse responsibilities
- Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Basic Life Support (BLS)

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.
Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.
The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I . A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for the required experience .
Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
*Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
S alary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range
