Description: Wastewater Program Intern

Wastewater treatment plants range from small privately-owned facilities treating sanitary wastewater from housing developments to large regional facilities treating millions of gallons a day of sanitary and industrial wastewater. Plants owned by municipalities are commonly called Publicly Owned Treatment Plants, or POTWs. In cooperation with local and federal authorities, MassDEP regulates many types of wastewater treatment plants.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Perform due diligence for a variety of municipal and privately owned wastewater treatment facilities by reviewing ongoing compliance and enforcement measures.
  • Assist with conducting compliance inspections of small and large, municipal and privately owned wastewater treatment facilities in the wastewater program's yearly inspection schedule.
  • Utilize technical writing skills to compose inspection reports including compliance action items centered around treatment facility operation and maintenance regulated under 314 CMR 12.00.
  • Assist municipal and private permittees in maintaining ongoing compliance and increasing resiliency of the wastewater treatment process and facility.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the basic principles of sanitary and environmental engineering related to wastewater collection, conveyance, and treatment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software as well as strong technical writing skills.
  • Interest in learning about Massachusetts regulatory programs as they relate to wastewater.
  • Previous experience conducting field work and touring a wastewater treatment facility is a bonus.
  • Ability to gather information and maintain accurate records.
