Job Opening:

The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for the position of Tractor Driver.

Incumbents of positions in this series operate equipment such as tractors, used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of roadways, grounds, etc.; operate heavy dump trucks, tractor-drawn mowers, and other equipment for roadways and grounds maintenance; operate light vehicles such as passenger cars and panel trucks for transporting personnel and materials; perform routine maintenance on equipment; maintain a record and prepare reports and perform related work as required.

The basic purpose of this work is to operate tractors used in maintaining grassed slopes of dikes and dams, roadsides, fields, grounds, and other projects. This position provides routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment used. The primary duty of this seasonal position is to regularly mow the grassed slopes of the Winsor Dam, Goodnough Dike, and associated fields in the Quabbin/Ware Region


Duties Include:


-Operate specialized machinery with attachments for slope mowing grass dams and dikes (e.g., Ventrac Tractor.

-Operate tractors to cut forest roads, dams, dikes, and other areas.

-Operate tractor with flail mower attachment to cut brush on roadsides, dikes, and other areas.

-Operate tractor with various other attachments to set fence posts and signs, chip brush, and other uses.

-Drive dump trucks to haul equipment and materials to job sites.

-If required, operate equipment such as backhoes and bulldozers.

-Perform other labor duties such as brush cutting, mowing, shoveling, and furniture moving.

-Perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment such as fueling, lubricating, cleaning, checking tire pressure, battery, etc.

-Maintains records and prepares reports on work progress, equipment maintenance and vehicle use.

Licensing Requirements:

Current and valid:

  • 2A Massachusetts Hoisting License (This is referred to in the Job Specs as Mass. Class C Equipment Operators License); and


  • CDL license (This is referred to in the Job Specs as a Mass. Class B Motor Vehicle Operator's License).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4G Massachusetts License


  • Class A - MA Motor Vehicle Operator's license

This Safety Sensitive position requires a CDL license, which will require the employee to participate in the DCR Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing Program Policy and be subject to Pre-placement and Random DOT Drug and Alcohol testing.

This position is designated as an "Emergency" position. Incumbents should expect to work on the occasion that the Governor declares a state of emergency if they are scheduled for work that day.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

I. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class CDL License .

II. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 2A Hoisting License issued by the Department of Public Safety.
