Work Hours: 40 hours, Shift varies, holiday and weekends required.

General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities: 
This position reports directly to and receives direction from the Regional Director. This position also receives programmatic guidance direction from the Chief of Interpretive Services. Oversees the interpretive program at Massachusetts state forests, parks, reservations and heritage parks throughout the region. Plans and develops resource specific programs, thematically based, interpretive programs, events and resources highlighting the cultural and natural history of the park(s).

Coordinates and/or supports seasonal events. Develop the interpretive service and program menu for parks within the region. Assist interpreters in planning, publicizing and implementing their programs and events. Evaluates those programs while providing feedback to interpreters.
Maintains communication with the Interpretive Services Chief, regional staff, and park supervisors throughout the region. Plans and implements programs and events at parks without an interpretive staff. Provides interpretive direction and support to interpretive services (personal and non-personal) within the region and within key agency stakeholders and partners. Works closely with regional staff, park supervisors and visitor services supervisors.
Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:
- Programmatic supervision of all interpretive staff in the region, including Visitor Services Supervisors and Park Interpreters.
- Organizes, supervises, plans, and directs all interpretive, recreational and educational programs and responsibilities Region-wide.
- Assists interpreters with planning, publicizing, and implementing interpretive, recreational, and environmental education programs at individual parks.
- Develops and implements requirements and expectations for program evaluation; monitors all interpretive, recreational and educational programs within the region to ensure that all levels of programming (development, thematic organization, publicity, delivery, documentation, and reporting) are being met.
- Attends and evaluates interpretive programs, providing documentation, coaching and constructive feedback to interpreters.
- Ensures all interpretive staff and areas within this complex are in Departmental and Agency compliance with interpretive guidelines and protocols.
- Ensures all interpretive staff employee performance reviews are completed in a timely manner in accordance with DCR Human Resources policies and procedures.
- Interviews candidates, assigns work, monitors scheduling, reviews and evaluates work performance, encourages staff development and training, and initiates progressive disciplinary action when necessary per DCR policy/procedures.
- Documents all park visits/issues/problems.
- Organizes regional seasonal interpreters' meetings.
- Administers regional budgets and procurement responsibilities for supplies, small equipment, presenters and other vendors using the Department Administration and Finance policies and bureau procedures.
- Assesses office and interpretive supply needs for seasonal interpreters and distributes those supplies.
- Directs and participates in response to calls for assistance from the public and DCR partners, including other state agencies or programs, Friends groups, public schools, scout groups, etc. by determining appropriate action to be taken, providing interpretive and visitor services as needed.
- Participate in supporting and enhancing interpretive services in Massachusetts by maintaining relationships with the National Association for Interpretation (NAI) and the National Park Service (NPS), as well as other organizations such as The Trustees for Reservations (TTOR) and Mass Audubon.
- Works with bureau to further the agency's initiatives, especially conservation and environmental education efforts, including Project Learning Tree and Parks As Classrooms .
- Participates in supporting and enhancing environmental education in Massachusetts by maintaining relationships with the Secretary's Advisory Group for Environmental Education (SAGEE), Massachusetts Environmental Education Society (MEES), and the New England Environmental Education Alliance (NEEEA).
- Coordinates the hiring of interpretive staff, including review of applications, scheduling and conducting interviews, recommending candidates to DCR Human Resources and all related documentation and reporting.
- Assists in training employees and volunteers in the skills and techniques of park interpretation and recreation programs.
- Prepares reports for the Interpretive Services Chief meetings and reports as needed.
- Prepares reports for the Regional Director, regional forest and park supervisors' meetings as needed.
- Assesses Park interpretive needs with respect to trail and other signage, researches and prepares materials such as brochures, pamphlets, maps, etc. for public distribution.
- Under the direction of the Chief of Interpretive Services develops and implements requirements and expectations for non-personal interpretive media such as brochures, signage, exhibits, displays, audio tours, etc.; monitors all non-personal interpretive media within the region to ensure that media is appropriate, thematic, and meets current best practices and standards.
- Identifies facility's needs, prepares drafts, scope work for deferred maintenance/capital projects for repairs, purchase orders for supplies and equipment, monitors expenditures and evaluates future needs for operational and capital projects.
- Under the direction of the Chief of Interpretive Services develops and supports the design, construction, and maintenance of interpretive signage using the DCR signage standards and interpretive signage standards
- Coordinates the DCR Southeast MA Adult Walking Club schedule including recruiting hike leaders, creating and distributing quarterly brochure and flyer four times a year.
- Assists with and coordinates initiatives and events such as the Park Passport, Discovery Packs, Angler Education Clinics, Park Serve Day, First Day Hikes, Concert Series, School Vacation initiatives, Seasonal Festivals, etc.
- Directs interpretive, park, and regional staff with providing visitors with dissemination of information and visitor services through communications, brochures, publications, resource materials, etc.
- Plans and delivers interpretive training for interpretive staff to best use heritage interpretation to meet the agency's mission for important natural and cultural state parks. This is done in formal training sessions as well as informal on-the job training.
- Creates, evaluates and revises Park Interpretive Profiles for all parks within the Region; creates, evaluates and revises Comprehensive Interpretive Plans for key parks within the Regions.
- Creates, evaluates and revises program schedules, service plans, and calendars of events for all interpretive staff based on the themes of the park, the resources of the park, and the audiences at the park while utilizing best interpretive methods.
- Performs related duties such as preparing correspondence and reports; maintains a reference library; develops and maintains records and files.
- Submits an end of the season report.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the maintenance and/or repair of recreational facilities or in recreational facilities or in recreational management and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. A certificate, diploma or degree as evidence of satisfactory completion of at least a two-year program in a recognized school above the high school level in building construction technology, electrical engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology or mechanical power engineering technology may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.
Education toward such a program will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
Note: Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience. No substitutions will be permitted for the required (B) experience.
