Job Description
Taunton State Hospital is seeking a qualified Registered Nurse I (RN) for a second shift position. New graduates are encouraged to apply. The RN I provides professional nursing care and education to adult mentally ill patients on locked inpatient units within DMH at Taunton State Hospital. The RN I is a member of the multidisciplinary team and assists in the formulation and implementation of the Person-Centered Recovery plan for each patient. The RN I employs professional standards of practice by assessing the health and mental health needs of patients, implementing interventions, and evaluating outcomes and serving as a patient advocate.
Please Note: This position is 40 hours per week. The selected candidate will work on the evening shift from 2:45 p.m. to 11:15 p.m. Days off are Week 1 - Monday and Saturday; Week 2 - Sunday and Wednesday.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
- Treats all patients with dignity and respect through interactions which affirm the individual's needs and preferences and by optimally integrating the patient perspective into all facets of care; will advocate for patients, facilitate timely resolution of patient concerns and assist patients in the exercise of their rights.
- Provides primary nursing care to patients on the inpatient psychiatric unit by assessing health status of patients, reviewing and recording health related data, administering standard nursing treatment, evaluating patients' conditions and adjusting care in conjunction with other providers and observation and interaction with patients.
- Provides psychosocial support to patients while maintaining therapeutic boundaries, promoting the highest level of patient autonomy and treating patients with dignity and respect.
- Attends and participates in shift reports, reviews documentation in patient's medical records, attends staff meetings and participates in treatment planning.
- Participate in the development and implementation of treatment plans by attending treatment planning meetings.
- Administer treatment and medication as prescribed by a physician according to practice standards and established hospital procedures; maintains accurate medication records as required.
- Assist in admission, discharge, and transfer of patients.
- Assist physician in examining patient in both physical and mental examinations.
- Work with unit staff to develop and maintain a therapeutic environment.
- Actively communicate with members of the treatment team and program staff to ensure maximum use of available resources and continuity of treatment.
- Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with nursing colleagues and other hospital departments.
- Participate in emergencies and mock emergencies in accordance with established procedures.
- Identifies, evaluates and responds to changes in patient's condition and reports findings to appropriate treatment team members and health care personnel.
- Perform other related duties such as responding to health and safety issues and initiating appropriate action and preparing and maintaining pertinent documentation in accordance with regulatory and departmental standards.
Required Qualifications:
- Knowledge of the theories and practices of nursing.
- Knowledge in the care of various types of patients.
- Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.

About Taunton State Hospital: Taunton State Hospital (TSH) operated by the Department of Mental Health (DMH) is a 62-bed inpatient facility that provides continuing care inpatient services to adults with major mental illnesses. The hospital is a leader in the successful integration of the Principles of Recovery and a rehabilitation philosophy into the treatment model and a part of the Southeast Area which works closely with the inpatient treatment teams to facilitate patients' discharge back to the community.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: None.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
