Position Summary

This is a State 911 Department Internal Posting Only

This position serves as a working Supervisor within a Wireless and Regional Communications Center, including all duties of a Public Safety Dispatcher I as defined elsewhere. In addition, Supervisors will direct and supervise subordinate staff, including assigning and delegating work projects, scheduling employees to ensure proper staffing levels are maintained, and performance management including evaluating work performance, coaching, mentoring, and/or implementing corrective action for performance and conduct issues. They provide technical assistance to staff, resolve minor work and personnel problems, give input regarding discipline, training, and major job reassignments to the Administration. Supervisor's plan and carry out the work independently and are expected to resolve problems in accordance with instructions, policies, procedures and applicable laws and regulations. Additionally, Supervisors may be tasked with administrative, quality assurance and training projects as delegated by the Administration.

Qualifications

  • Experience working in a supervisory capacity in a communications center preferred
  • Ability to meet prerequisites of a Public Safety Dispatcher I, including the follow certifications: Public Safety Telecommunicator, Emergency Medical Dispatch, CPR, NG911 Equipment training, IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800, and maintain for the duration of employment
  • Ability to obtain the following certifications within one (1) year of hire: Fire Service Communications Course, ICS 300, Communication Supervisor and Communications Training Officer, and maintain for the duration of employment
  • Experience operating the following communications equipment: IMC CAD and Motorola MCC7500 Radio Consoles
  • No disqualifying criminal history
  • Successfully pass pre-screening, including drug screening and hearing test
  • Ability to complete State required ethics and conflict of interest training
  • Able to function and work independently with or without the support of another Supervisor/Administrator
  • Ability to type on a keyboard at a sufficient speed
  • Ability to consistently speak in a clear, well-modulated voice
  • Reliable transportation to work at all hours on different shifts

  • Constant state of readiness to answer and dispatch calls
  • Abidance of safe work practices
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time in one location
  • Operating specialized communications equipment
  • Ability to operate in an environment with high noise level

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

  • Distinguishing the difference between colors
  • English language usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Operating specialized communications equipment


Qualifications

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the operation of emergency telecommunications systems and (B) a high school diploma or certificate of graduation from a secondary education school or program recognized by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

A Massachusetts High School Equivalency diploma, certificate of General Educational Development (GED), or an equivalent secondary education credential recognized by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts may also be accepted.

External candidates may be required to successfully complete a critical skills assessment prior to hire.

Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid motor vehicle driver's license at a class level specific to assignment.

Based on assignment, incumbents must be certified as a Communications Training Officer and/or obtain other related certification(s) via on-the-job training as determined by the Agency and must be able to obtain and maintain job-related certifications and/or credentials necessary to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of their work assignment.
