Job Description

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking experienced and dedicated Registered Nurses (RN) III, for our Medical Intermediate Care Unit (MICU) for the hospital campus in Jamaica Plain.

Implementing the nursing process in collaboration with a health care team, the selected RN will be responsible and accountable for delegating, coordinating, and providing care to patients in a critical care setting, which includes providing perioperative and post anesthesia nursing care according to PI concepts and integrating departmental, hospital mission and standards, state, federal laws and regulatory agencies into professional standards of care/ practice for clients from the community and other referral agencies under the direction of the nurse manager.

Please note: There are 5 openings available, and all shifts require working every other weekend.

Day Shift - 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Evening Shift - 3:00 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.

Night Shift - 11:15 p.m. - 7:15 a.m.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and are not all inclusive):

  • Provides leadership and guidance in the delivery of patient care as team leader in absence of nurse manager to assign, supervise, and evaluate the perioperative nursing care of RNs, LPNs, NAs and support staff.
  • Ensures nursing care is provided based on established nursing standards with ongoing documentation for clients from the community and other referral agencies under the direction of the Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse.
  • Initiates physical, psychosocial, and spiritual assessment of patients nursing care needs according to admission procedure and as specified per unit policy.
  • Develops a Plan of Care with patient, patient's significant others, multi-disciplinary health care team, and other resources which supports the analysis of data.
  • Implements and documents nursing interventions as per plan of care and in accordance with nursing theory, LSH/Nursing Department/Unit policies and procedures, Joint Commission, DPH, and federal and state laws.
  • Transcribes physician orders accurately for medications/tests/interventions; administers and documents prescribed medications and monitors/documents response to medication and any adverse or toxic effects.
  • Provides ongoing assessment and evaluation of patient status to determine effectiveness of interventions, patient's response to treatment, outcomes and/or significant conditions occur.
  • Documents nursing care process and outcomes/situational occurrences in accordance with LSH/ Nursing Department/Unit Policies/Procedures.
  • Assesses, identifies, and provides for education and training of patient/ patient's significant others to improve patient's health outcomes; assists in gaining the knowledge and skills that facilitate understanding of health status, return to function, healthy behaviors, and that meets the ongoing health care needs of the patient.
  • Provides consistent leadership in organizing the delivery of care according to department standards by performing charge duties as delegated by nurse manager.
  • Participates and contributes to departmental and hospital wide performance improvement activities/ risk management by assisting in data collection and analysis, identifying opportunities for evaluation and improvement in care or services, and by involvement in and assessment of findings and actions taken to improve care.
  • Demonstrates competence in assessing and providing age-appropriate care to all patients and is cognizant of and sensitive to patients' cultural and spiritual needs.
  • Administers all types of medications, including but not limited to, antibiotics, analgesics, medications for hypotension, TPN, medications for ventilator management.

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the scientific theories and principles of nursing in medical/surgical or critical care settings.
  • Recognize symptoms of mental illness and/or emotional disorders.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate through oral and written reporting to providers, other nursing personnel, and members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to remain calm, make decisions, and act quickly in stressful and/or emergency situations.
  • Establish a rapport and deal tactfully with persons from varied ethnic, cultural and/or socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Capacity to coordinate the efforts of others in accomplishing work objectives.
  • Familiarity of principles and practices of supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of critical care nursing.
  • Experience assessing patients per Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment (CIWA) scale and medicating appropriately.
  • Ability to prioritize and re-prioritize in emergency/critical situations.

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, and (B) six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
