The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conserving the state's natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities, and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public. The Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) serves Massachusetts' citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats while providing sustainable fisheries-related recreational and commercial opportunities.

Description:

Marine Fisheries Intern

The Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) manages the state's commercial and recreational saltwater fisheries and oversees other services that support the marine environment and fishing communities. This internship supports two of our educational programs relating to seafood and saltwater recreational fishing. DMF's Seafood Marketing Program seeks to increase awareness and demand for our local seafood for the benefit of our commercial fishing and seafood communities and industries. The Saltwater Angler Education Program seeks to engage the public in saltwater fishing in Massachusetts and teach responsible fishing in an enthusiastic environment and create avid anglers. This internship is ideal for those interested in marine biology and communications/journalism and food systems offering hands-on experience in a variety of ways.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create content that will tell the story of Massachusetts sustainable fisheries.
  • Research the history and significance of commercial fishing in Massachusetts for MA250.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of educational workshops and outreach events.
  • Represent DMF at the educational events below. Weekend availability is required, travel expenses are reimbursed.
    • Squid Event: Boston, Saturday July 7th
    • Marine Quest: Salem, Saturday, June 14th
    • Deer Island Fishing Festival: Boston, Saturday, June 21st
    • Water Safety Day: Cape Cod Canal Visitors Center, Saturday, June 28th

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in marine sustainability: An alignment with the mission of DMF, sustainable seafood practices, and promoting recreational fishing as a tool for environmental stewardship.
  • Engagement with stakeholders: Ability to engage and build relationships with local stakeholders, including recreational fishers, seafood industry members, environmental groups, and government agencies.
  • Problem-solving and initiative: Ability to take initiative, think critically, and adapt to new challenges while working independently and as part of a team.
  • Communication and Outreach Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational skills, ability to conduct research with attention to detail.

The position is scheduled for June 2-August 15,2025 at approximately 30 hours/week, weekends and in-state travel is required.
