Job Description

The Parole Board's mission is to promote public safety through supervised, conditional release of inmates to the community, so that a successful transition from confinement to discharge from parole provides a basis for continued responsible conduct. We serve the public, victims, inmates, parolees, and petitioners throughout the Commonwealth by conducting face-to-face parole release hearings, providing notice and assistance to victims, supervising parolees in the community, and providing reentry services to those leaving custody with no mandated post-release supervision.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Incumbents in this position are responsible for representing the agency's position and statutory obligations in legal matters, obtains information on cases for hearings, advise agency staff on legal matters, draft administrative and legal documents, provide information to the public on agency functions, rules and regulations and perform related work as required.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):
  1. Represent the Parole Board in Superior Court civil litigation.
  2. Represent the Parole Board before administrative boards and commissions.
  3. Respond to public records requests.
  4. Assist General Counsel in executive clemency and termination matters.
  5. Assist Board Members and General Counsel in preparing decisions on life sentence cases.
  6. Assist General Counsel in the review and drafting of parole regulations.
  7. Assist the Attorney General's Office with parole litigation handled by the Attorney General.
  8. Provide legal advice and opinions on parole matters for the agency's staff.
  9. Respond to inquiries from private attorneys, assistant district attorneys, parolees and incarcerated individuals concerning parole legal matters and records.
  10. Represent the agency at legal seminars, conferences, training and meetings held by other agencies or legal organizations.
  11. Assist General Counsel in reviewing and revising agency policies.
  12. Other related duties as required.


Qualifications

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, admission to the Massachusetts Bar and (A) at least three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in the practice of law.

Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid Motor Vehicle Drivers License at a Class level specific to assignment.
