This is a contract position funded through June 30, 2026. This position would be expected to follow a hybrid model of reporting to work that combines two (2) in-office workdays and telework days as needed. The primary work location is Everett; however, the incumbent might be required to travel elsewhere.

Please note that pursuant to Massachusetts general law, contracted employees are not paid for the eleven scheduled holidays, do not receive any paid, vacation, personal leave benefits, or contribute to the state retirement system or social security. As a state contracted employee, you must participate in direct deposit and contribute towards the Commonwealth of Massachusetts state alternate retirement plan, ("OBRA Plan").

The History Social/Science contractor will work in the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Center for Instructional Support. Key responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

Plan large-scale, in-person civics events to be held in Spring 2026 for hundreds of students from across Massachusetts. This work includes:
• working with stakeholders to develop content and a plan for the day;

• managing communication with educators;

• conducting outreach to external organizations and partners to attract volunteer support and publicize the event;

• and overseeing and executing all logistics, including working with an outside vendor to coordinate the event if necessary.

Support the development of resources to be used by educators across the state, to further high-quality, culturally responsive history/social science instruction for all students, with a particular focus on supporting elementary social studies instruction and developing teachers' content knowledge. These resources may include, e.g.:

• Guidance around best practices for elementary social studies instruction

• Curriculum reviews

• Curricular materials for grades 3-7 under the Department's Investigating History initiative

• Grants

Support statewide history/social science projects by collaborating with Department staff. This work may include, e.g.:

• Facilitating in-person and remote large-scale professional development sessions for history teachers

• Recruitment and selection of the 2024 Massachusetts History Teacher of the Year

Perform related duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Classroom teaching experience at the preK-12 level, particularly with historically underserved populations; candidates with experience teaching social studies at the elementary (K-5) level are particularly encouraged to apply;

Ability to manage complex projects independently, including being organized with documents, prioritizing tasks, and meeting deadlines;

Knowledge of, and interest in, important elements of history, social science, and civics content and pedagogy, including:

• Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for History Social Science and the Civics Project Guidebook
• The role of historical practices/skills and literacy skills in history/social science instruction
• Creating relevant learning experiences that connect to students' identities, prior knowledge, and lived experiences

Knowledge of culturally and linguistically sustaining practices, including knowledge of the WIDA 2020 Framework, and commitment to bringing an anti-racist lens to every aspect of the work; candidates with experience teaching multilingual learners are particularly encouraged to apply

Belief in the ability of all students to master grade-level material and a demonstrated commitment to equity in education

Improvement mindset with a desire to be coached, solicit and receive feedback, and continually improve

Willingness to question the status quo and traditional assumptions in order to best meet the needs of all students

Comfort partnering with a range of diverse stakeholders, tailoring communication and approach in ways that lead to meaningful collaboration and strengthened relationships
