Who we are: The Division of Occupational Licensure ("DOL"), is an agency within the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, which operates under the Secretariat of the Executive Office of Economic Development ("EOED"), is responsible for oversight of 26 boards of registration, as well as the Office of Public Safety Inspections and the Office of Private Occupational School Education. Collectively, DOL boards and offices license and regulate more than 500,000 individuals, businesses, and schools to engage in over 100 trades and professions in Massachusetts. The EOED prioritizes economic opportunity for residents, collaborative leadership in communities, and an environment that supports job creation and business growth.

DOL Legal Interns will work 2 - 4 days a week (Minimum 12 - 20 hours for the fall internship). Interns will work in-office at One Federal Street and will not be permitted to telework.

The internship program will run from September 2025 through December 2025. Interviews will be held virtually.

Legal Interns will be paid $21 an hour.

*** Please submit a cover letter and resume and a writing sample between five to ten pages that demonstrates your legal reasoning and analytical skills. The writing sample should be your own work.

The ideal candidate would be an individual who is passionate about public service and consumer protection and eager to learn and build legal experience in a professional setting. We are looking forward to meeting anyone who is prompt, professional, and ready to learn new things as they pertain to public service.

Projects to be completed during the internship will consist of predetermined assignments and ad hoc assignments. These may include:

  • Performing legal research including analysis of regulations, statutes, and case law;
  • Preparing research memoranda;
  • Gathering information and preparing written reports, charts, and other written materials summarizing information;
  • Attending board meetings and administrative hearings;
  • Assisting Prosecuting Counsel and Hearings Officers with administrative hearings, Board Counsel with board meetings, and DOL's Assistant General Counsel for Public Affairs with responses to public records requests; and
  • Preparing preliminary drafts of documents (letters, notices, reports, etc.) for review by DOL attorneys.

You Will Have the Opportunity To:

Skills & Expertise Required

  • Currently pursuing a J.D. at an accredited United States law school.
  • Demonstrated legal research skills and ability to use legal research platforms.
  • Excellent collaboration and team building skills.
  • Demonstrated written communication skills.
  • Strong verbal communication and listening skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and handle sensitive information.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must have legal work authorization in the U.S.
